Dr Caldwell was registered as a nurse in1979, she gained a first class honours degree in Social Policy at Middlesex University in 1991, a PGCHE at Surrey University in 1992 before completing her PhD (The impact of the NHS reforms in the professional practice of doctors and nurses and the quality of patient care) at Middlesex in 1997.
Dr Caldwell took up the post of Head of Institute of Nursing and Midwifery in 2005, and Social Work joined the Institute in 2012. Dr Caldwell's clinical background is in nursing, and she still maintains strong links with Trusts across London

Dr Caldwell co-chaired the London Deans of Health in 2012/3 and is an active member of the Council of Deans of Health. She has been a Trustee of the Lady Hoare Trust and Contact A Family for the last 12 years and chairs the UK Services and Policy Committee.
