Dr Lilian Miles is a senior lecturer in the Leadership, Work and Organisation Department. She has previously taught at Northumbria University, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Manchester. She has held visiting lecturer posts at the Universities of Hamburg, Dresden and Leipzig. She also taught Consumer Law for many years at the University of Hong Kong. She is a Visiting Researcher at the Centre for Research on Women and Gender, Universiti Sains Malaysia.
She is interested in exploring the impact of legal and political systems, and culture and religion on the development of corporate governance and employment relations policies and practices. She is familiar with corporate governance structures and employment relations systems in many Asian countries. She is currently looking at ways in which workers' capabilities in the Asian workplace may be expanded.
Qualifications and Affiliations
Over the years, Lilian has taught on several undergraduate modules, including Contract Law, Business Law, Company Law, and International Business Law. Postgraduate modules include Corporate Governance, Corporate Social Responsibility, Transnational Corporations and Labour Rights, Employment Relations in Asian Countries.
Lilian is Programme Leader for the MA in Human Resource Management at Middlesex University. She is also module leader for two modules at undergraduate level, Law for Business and International Business Law.
Lilian has actively engaged in scholarly research and publication since 2005. Her interests lie in corporate governance and employment relations as they apply to developing, mainly Asian, countries. She has published several articles on these topics, many of which explore the impact of culture, religion, legal and political systems on their developments. These culminated in her obtaining her PhD (Transplanting the Anglo American Corporate Governance Model into Asian Countries: Prospects and Practicality) in 2010. She has latterly concentrated on investigating the roles of Corporate Codes of Conduct, unions and NGOs in improving working conditions in developing countries. Her publications since 2010 show a growing interest in this area. Expanding research in this area has involved looking at the relevance of "development frameworks" for labour rights and conducting empirical work (in Malaysia and South Korea, see publications list). Finally, she has also broadened her exploration of this area by becoming involved in research projects funded by the International Labour Organization and United Nations.
Lilian has acted as reviewer for various peer reviewed Journals, including The Journal of Corporate Law Studies, Economic and Industrial Democracy, Journal of Contemporary Asia and Asia Pacific Business Review.
Lilian welcomes proposals for postgraduate supervision from students interested in the fields of corporate governance, CSR and labour developments in developing countries.
