Richard Osborne joined Middlesex University in 2010. He was previously a researcher on the AHRC funded project Colonial Film and before that was studying for his PhD in Cultural Studies with the London Consortium at Birkbeck.

Richard Osborne's book Vinyl: A History of the Analogue Record (Ashgate, 2012) was awarded a special mention in the 2013 IASPM book prize and was a finalist in the ARSC Awards for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research 2013.
