Diane is an Associate Professor in Environmental Health/Biology; she has keen interests in the fields of environment and biotechnology. She is the Honorary Secretary of the Committee of the Heads of Environmental Sciences in the UK and a Fellow of the Institution of Environmental Sciences. Her reserach focuses on the role of microorganisms in pollution control and bioremediation.

Diane teaches on the MSc Environmental Pollution Control and BSc Biology programmes. She has special interestes in contaminated land and biotechnology, in particular the use of microorganisms to bioremediate environmental pollutants. Diane has part of the review panel for the UK QAA Subject Benchmark Statement Earth sciences, environmental sciences and environmental studies in 2014.

Diane has been appointed as the Task Group Chair in 2015 by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) to lead the project: The environmental and health challenges of e-waste and its management: an emerging 21st century global concern.
She is the Chair and organiser of the satellite event on e-waste in the 15th European Chemical Sciences International Conference on Chemistry and the Environment, 20-24 September 2015, Leipzig Germany.

As an Executive Officer of the Committee of Heads of Environmental Sciences (CHES), Diane engages in the advancement of environmental sciences teaching, learning, knowledge exchange, research and scholarship in the UK and international higher and further education sectors. She is the author of the monthly newsletter for the committee and has executive responsibility in adminstering the strategic plans.
Through CHES and as a Fellow of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), Diane engages extensively with the professional bodies and practitioners in the environmental area. She has organised CHES Annual Meeting and Conferences in association with the HEA and written for 'Environmental Scientist' (an IES journal).
She has been appointed to the QAA's Earth Science, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Study Subject Benchmark Review panel in 2014.
Diane also collaborates closely with the Environmental Agency and local NGOs on pollution projects for students on the MSc Environmental Pollution Control programme.
