    London Sport Institute

The LSI has been built on a range of highly successful and innovative undergraduate programmes and offers excellent opportunities for students, enabling them to lead an active and healthy lifestyle during their years of study at Middlesex. On to this firm base, the Institute has developed high quality research, rapidly developing postgraduate programmes and enhanced opportunities for MPhil/PhD study. The Institute therefore has the full spectrum of academic activities in sport, exercise and health.

    Our teaching

Our students are given a high quality grounding in sport and exercise science, which they then develop into professionally-related degrees – for example in sports rehabilitation, sports performance, coaching and teaching sport. The Institute is active in developing partnerships (e.g. Tottenham Hotspur Foundation), providing volunteering and placement opportunities for our students in schools and local sports organisations (e.g. Connie Henry Track Academy), and in supporting the development of sport and physical activity initiatives in our region. Students work in our labs and clinic in order to develop skills within a supportive and vibrant environment.

We are committed to ensuring our courses remain as relevant to employers as possible and that our graduates meet their needs. According to the latest Unistats statistics, 100% of our undergraduate students move on to employment or further study within six months of graduation. Our programmes of study do not focus exclusively on the elite athlete, but on all players and exercisers. Accordingly, our graduates are not only employed with many of the leading sporting clubs, teams and organisations in the UK (such as The English Institute of Sport, English Rugby, Swansea FC, British Canoe Slalom, Brighton & Hove FC), but are also taking advantage of the the increasing employment opportunities within public health.

Our facilities include a human movement laboratory with the opportunity to use equipment where top athletes, including London 2012 Olympians and the GB fencing team, have been assessed. There is also a human performance lab, a health and injury clinic and clinical therapy room which supports student learning and athletes.

    Our consultancy

A range of clients have benefited from our facilities, research knowledge and expertise. For example, we recently worked in partnership with Linking London to develop short, accredited courses at higher education level 4. The courses were accessible to employers, enabling them to support a large workforce with a different learning experience.

The LSI works with the total athlete from pre-season, monitoring, injury prevention, recovery to technique analysis. Testing can include body composition profiling, aerobic assessment, running economy, muscle parameters, force production, gait analysis, lactate profiling, Vo2 max testing, bone mineral density scanning and psychometric analysis. Our labs incorporate the latest wireless EMG, 3D motion analysis, ultrasound imaging, and force plate technology.
