Economics and Statistics Department
We launched the very first Mathematics for Business degree in the United Kingdom in the mid-1960s. With this pedigree, the Department of Economics and Statistics brings together exceptional expertise in the teaching of economics and the quantitative disciplines, gained over a period of forty years.
We aim to blend teaching expertise in economic and quantitative business subjects with real-life business topics and applications. Accordingly, there is an active and accelerating programme of research, which aims to complement our teaching ethos. As an example, the Centre for Enterprise and Economic Development Research (CEEDR) serves as a focus for applied research.
We also run a Statistical Consultancy service which is available to all who need help and advice for their work and research.
We attract a diverse mix of students from across the world and we take great pride in providing friendly, accessible staff to support our students through their studies.
Academic expertise
We have a highly qualified, experienced body of academic staff. Staff are actively engaged in research and consultancy and have published academic papers, books and research monographs on a wide range of subjects. On the quantitative side this includes statistical techniques for business, applied statistical quality, financial mathematics, and operational research and logistics. Our economists are active in research across a broad area of applied economics, including work on labour markets, money, banking and macro-economic stability, productivity and technological uptake as well as theoretical work on industrial organisation and game theory.
In addition, in terms of topic focus, work is underway on EU integration, Eastern Europe, trade and economic transition. Finally there is an increasing interest in development, in particular emerging markets, China, ASEAN and the Southern African economies.
A regular series of working papers is published, and a programme of internal and external research seminars held. Research staff have presented papers at international conferences worldwide, and published books and articles in a wide variety of journals. We have made a strong contribution to the University’s submission to the UK-wide 2008 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise).
