Sexual health professionals 'revert to rape myths'

Professionals occasionally revert to using myths about rape when discussing individual cases, even if they think they have seen past common misconceptions.
This is according to new research presented at the British Psychological Society's Division of Clinical Psychology conference in Manchester yesterday, which was conducted by Susan Hansen of Middlesex University and Dr Catherine Butler of Barts and the London NHS Hospitals Trust.

The findings came from a focus group of four sexual health professionals, who were encouraged to talk about three cases of sexual assault and Dr Butler noted that even though the "professional discourse on 'rape as power' was applied to the individual scenarios", it was not done so on a consistent basis.
She explained participants occasionally "reverted back to 'common-sense' rape myths", something that, if done during actual interaction with a victim, could "compound the psychological impact of the rape".
