Middlesex focuses on next generation TV professionals
Middlesex University’s industry leading educational facilities ensures students are best equipped to pursue careers in the highly competitive creative media industry.
One such example is the recent installation of two industry-standard TV studios in the new Grove building at Hendon campus.
Middlesex is an accredited Skillset Media Academy, a kitemark of quality that acknowledges the University as a centre of excellence in television and interactive media in the UK.
The studios provide students with HD-enabled facilities that replicate real-life workflows and production environments. The new facility has six HD cameras across two studios allowing for simultaneous productions.
“The studio will give students a much greater understanding of how real-life production facilities work, enhancing their prospects of a rewarding career in the creative media sector,” said Middlesex University Television Production course leader Roddy Gibson.
“Our students can also work simultaneously on editing, searching and managing the content that is stored after it has been produced. The studio also provides a new stream of commercial opportunities with the option of hiring out the facilities to industry professionals, boosting revenues and enhancing the learning and networking opportunities for our students,” he added.
Sony Professional, which helped build the studios, said Middlesex offers “one of the UK’s most hands on TV degrees.”
The group installed two new HD studios, including the upgrade of an existing post production system with
shared storage, as well as installing an integrated playout system for the campus TV network.
“The facility is the result of a two-and-a-half year collaboration between University staff, our team of designers, systems architects, project managers and Vinci Construction’s team of engineers,” said Ahmed Ghori, Senior Account Manager at Sony Professional.
“Our professionals worked with the University staff and faculty from an operational and educational perspective to ensure they got the most out of the studio and that it was a suitable teaching environment for students and staff,” he added.
Since the Grove building opened in September, it has been getting an enthusiastic response from both students and staff alike.
Along with the TV equipment, students are also benefitting from some of the UK’s most impressive facilities for other subjects too, including fine art, graphic design, interior design, fashion, photography, 3D animation, multimedia and film.
“We designed the Grove to provide an inspirational environment and give our students the best possible start to their careers at the heart of the creative industries,” said Phil Healey, Middlesex University’s head of Art and Design.
“Whether students go on to be self-employed entrepreneurs or work for large companies, they will have the advantage of cutting edge experience using truly professional facilities.”
