Research Interests
Much of Clare's research focuses on the institutions and policies associated with the management of water, both in the UK and overseas. She is particularly interested in highlighting the intensely politicised nature of water management decision-making. In accordance with this, her work has been varied and interdisciplinary in nature, ranging from her PhD, which focused on the politics of irrigation in Malaysia, to more recent work on risk and decision-making in the UK water sector. More recently, Clare has been leading a team of researchers investigating the catalytic nature of crises for policy-making adaptation. This has been funded by the ESRC as part of their Environment and Human Behaviour New Opportunities Programme. Clare is the author of numerous papers and is on the British committee of the International Commission for Irrigation and Drainage.
Biography
Roles and Responsibilities
Clare is a part time Senior Research Fellow within the Centre. From an original focus on the political economy of irrigation management in a developing country context, Clare has expanded and strengthened her research portfolio to include a focus on, amongst others, climate change adaptation, risk, water policy, flood hazard management, integrated water resource management and the economic appraisal of flood and coastal defence. She is responsible for a range of externally funded research contracts from the ESRC, Defra, the EA and the British Academy. She is also responsible for ensuring that this research is disseminated as widely as possible. As a result, her research publications include outputs as academic journal papers, web-page briefings, conference papers and reports, research reports as well as media articles.
