Lian's research primarily focuses on urban stormwater management, including the performance of stormwater best management practices, the behaviour and fate of urban pollutants and opportunities to facilitate the take-up of research into practice and policy. Recent research has involved the application of an ecosystem services approach to urban water bodies, an evaluation of an urban river restoration from a public health perspective and the social use of parks.
