Research Interests

  • Design for All Research Group - I am head of the Design for All Research Group and active within the field of Design for All standardisation and legislation. http://www.mdx.ac.uk/schools/cs/research/d4a/index.asp
  • EDeAN - The School of Computer Science's Design for All Research Group is a European Centre for excellence in the field of ICT Design for All, it is also the UK National Contact Centre (NCC) for the European Design for All e-Accessibility Network (EDeAN). In these roles it is active in groundbreaking research and curriculum work. EDeAN was established to raise the profile of Design for All through joint activities such as conferences, symposia and exchanges of students and scholars. As UK NCC the Design for All Group is currently involved in arranging a series of meetings on the Design for All Curricula and also a series of Expert workshops for professionals.

  • DFA@eInclusion I am currently leading the Universities work on a European framework 6 funded collaborative action; DFA@eInclusion, by supporting and instigating eInclusion and Design for All ICT training across the EU. The results of this work will be used to implement ICT Design for All courses for a wide range of stakeholders including designers, business executives, user groups, undergraduates and post graduates. I have recently worked as an evaluator for the European Unions research funding call, ICT-2007.7.2: Accessible and Inclusive ICT.
  • Standards - I am chair of the European Design-for-all and Assistive Technology Standardisation Co-ordination Group (DATSCG - a working group of the ICT standards board). DATSCG acts as an interface between the standards community, the Design for All community and the European Union, as such it acts as an information exchange on all areas of Design for All including research, legislation and international activities. The committee has recently provided input to the review of the USA section 508 legislation (Section 508 requires that the USA's Federal agencies' electronic and information technology is accessible to people with disabilities) as well as receiving updates from the European Commission and research and conference reports.
  • I am currently leading DATSCG's as we work to organise the users input to the European Standards Organisation with respect to mandate EC Mandate 376. This mandate was given by the European Commission so that a solution for common requirements and conformance assessment for accessible ICT could be produced. These results will be used within European public procurement policy and practice to assist in removing barriers to participation in the Information Society by disabled or older people. I am also a member of the Special Needs Working Group of ANEC and the ANEC W3C Project Team. ANEC is the European Association for the co-ordination of consumer representation in standardisation). http://www.ictsb.org/Working_Groups/DATSCG/Index.htm

  • BERR - I am a member of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform's i2010 eInclusion Stakeholder Group. This work enables me to utilise my knowledge of e-accessibility. I am also a member of the steering group of the BERR's Knowledge Transfer Networks - UK Displays Network, where my role is to educate and inform Display professionals of the needs of disabled users (especially those with a visual impairment).
