Biography

Nye Parry is a composer and sound artist working in installation, multimedia and contemporary dance.
He has made work for numerous museums including the Science Museum, the National Maritime Museum, the Heineken Museum and Kew Bridge Steam Museum. His multi-channel work Boomtown, for Oldham borough's 150th anniversary celebrations, has spawned an ongoing interest in the use of Oral history in composition, which led to The Memory Machine, a collaboration with Cathy Lane. This interactive installation collects reminiscences of members of the public and was used by over 8000 gallery visitors during a six month exhibition at the British Museum in 2003. A themed issue of Organised Sound on Sound History and Memory followed, edited by Parry and Lane.

Much of Nye's work focuses on creative use of space as a formal parameter of composition. This includes work with Matthew King on the King:'s Wood Symphony, a composition spread over a mile of forest in Kent in 2007 and an ongoing research project with other members of the Lansdown Centre and the BBC involving GPS controlled drama experiences.

Work for contemporary dance includes numerous collaborations with Yael Flexer, including pieces for Bedlam, Scottish Dance Theatre and the Circus Space, as well as pieces for, Colin Poole, Raphael Bonacela, Charles Linehan, Sarah Rubidge and Bi Ma and a CD-ROM with Mark Baldwin. Nye also composes concert works which have been broadcast internationally, including BBC Radio 3 and France Musique.

Nye has a PhD in electroacoustic composition from City University and runs the MA in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University. He also teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
