Research Interests

Stella has been specialising in a range of Race and Equality-related training, research, capacity building and consultancy work for nearly 20 years. She is a trained teacher, and was a manager in a large FE College prior to setting up FRONT LINE TRAINING in 1988. She is the author of a number of key publications and resources aimed at promoting good practice in colleges, schools, local councils and other public bodies. She has many years experience of developing and facilitating training programmes for corporation members, senior and operational managers and all grades of Staff members throughout the Learning Skills Sector, as well as for schools, local councils and voluntary groups.

Biography

Education and Training

Stella has a long track record of working with colleges and adult learning providers in the UK, and her name is well known throughout the Learning Skills sector. She has written and compiled guidance for the Learning Skills Development Agency and the Learning Skills Council on mainstreaming good practice in Equality Diversity. Her publication Equality Assurance: Self-Assessment for Equal Opportunities in Further Education (FEDA, 1998) continues to serve as a working guide for Education providers. She is also the author of three Good Practice Guides on Race Equality in Employment; and an accompanying E-Learning resource that promotes awareness of race equality within the sector using checklists and practical training activities.

Education, youth and community work

Stella is a key contributor to the development of Race Equality strategies in education, youth and community work. Her publication Toolkit for Tackling racism in School (Trentham Books, 2000) is actively used by both schools and Local Education Authorities in the UK. She is currently a consultant on AIMING HIGH, a national DfES-funded project to raise the attainment of African Caribbean pupils in thirty targeted schools.

Citizenship eductation

Since 2003, Stella has been working closely with the Bernie Grant Memorial Trust to develop and facilitate Community Leadership courses for Black communities across the UK.

Work with Government Agencies

Stella has worked in partnership with a number of central government agencies, including the LSC (Learning Skills Council) the LSDA (Learning Skills Development Agency), the TSC (Training Standards Council), the NYA (National Youth Agency), the CRE (Commission for Racial Equality and the DfES (Department for Education and Skills). In 1999, she was contracted by the Commission for Racial Equality to research and compile ?Auditing for Equality: Auditing Council Performance against the CRE's national standard 'REMQ' (Racial Equality Means Quality). More recently she has been instrumental in supporting the work of the Commission for Black Staff members in Further Education. She is currently a member of a national Steering Group which has strategic responsibility for meeting the recommendations of the Commission for Black Staff members in FE across the Learning Skills sector.
