Other forms of public output (exhibition, stage production):

Heineken Robot During 4-7 February 2010, I exhibited the Heineken Robot at the Kinetic Art Fair, held at the P3 gallery in central London. This installation consisted of an autonomous beer serving robot designed to interact with the general public. The robot was featured on the Engadget website and subsequently the story has been copied to 70,000 other websites worldwide. Dancing Robots During 2007, I led a team of four students that designed and developed six life-size robots for a 50 min stage production of 'Swan Breaks' in collaboration with the Hip Hop dance company Robert Hylton Urban Classicism (RHUC) which premiered at the Laban Theatre, London on 11 October 2007.

Over the course of the last six years, as the Course Leader for the MSc in Design Engineering, I have worked with over forty industrial companies and organisations - a selection of these are previewed below. This work has also been used as the basis for PG research, taught modules and industrial placements. Metropolitan Police (Forensic Science Lab) - 2008-09 Pole Climbing Surveillance tools development of a mechatronic device to enable wide-area observation and analysis of crime scenes. This work has interested the Home Office Scientific Development Branch and was entered into The Engineer Competition 2009.

WorldSkills UK - 2007-09 Mobile Robotics Competition Organiser and UK Expert. This role has involves the selection, training and development of teams from the UK to compete in National, European and International Competitions. I also organise and run the National Finals for Mobile Robotics held annually at our Trent Park Campus.

Ministry of Defence (Defence Technology and Innovation Centre) - 2007-08 MoD Grand Challenge Event 2008 (I-Spy Team Leader). I led the Middlesex team which developed a unique (Patented) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle which was shortlisted to compete in the finals held at the British Army's Copehill Down Urban Warfare Training Centre on Salisbury Plain.

I am the chairman of the National Organising Committee for the UK entry to the Eurobot competition which is a Europe-wide robotics competition involving 30 countries. During the last five years I have taken teams to compete in Switzerland, Italy, France (twice)and Germany. This year's World Final will be held in Rapperwil, Switzerland, 26-30 June 2010. Middlesex teams have won the UK final for the past six years.

I was appointed by WorldSkills UK as their Expert for Mobile Robotics and in this role I observed the competition in Shizouka, Japan in Nov 2007. In 2008, teams from Middlesex won Gold in Mechatronics and Silver in Mobile Robotics in the UK Finals. In 2009, teams from Middlesex were awarded Gold in Mobile Robotics and Silver in Mechatronics. In 2010, teams from Middlesex won Gold in both competitions.

We are now focussing on the WSC 2011 when London will host the event. It is envisaged that Middlesex students could represent the UK Mobile Robotics and Mechatronics teams in these events.

In terms of international collaboration, I have been conducting research with colleagues in Taiwan investigating cross-cultural design issues to do with interface design applications. Specifically looking at web browser icons and organic operating systems using the garden metaphor. I have also been collaborating with other colleagues in the area of nano materials science.

I have a strong interest in grouping strategies and psychometric testing for problem-based learning and have been publishing in this area for a number of years. This work has led to the development and use of a unique psychometric selection tool for use in the recruitment process for the MSc in Design Engineering course. A recent article published in theJournal of Engineering Education was the second highest cited paper during 2008-09.

Impact and Public Engagement Under the auspices of the Autonomous Systems Lab, I have been leading a group of research staff and students to develop mechatronic and robotic systems within the broad areas of Defence and Security.

We have developed a range of technological platforms which consist of unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles and robotic climbing systems which provide novel situational awareness solutions to the end user. We actively promote these advances at National and International events such as the MoD Grand Challenge 2008, as well as encourage and explain the impact that these technologies will have to the general public through events such as Digital Futures, Enfield Mayors Award, WorldSkills UK and Eurobot.

Research Supervision

I am currently supervising two fully-funded PhD research students in the area of unmanned systems, which over the course of their studies will be worth £160k. I am also supervising two 3rd year industrial placement students who are likely to become future PhD candidates within the next 18 months. Research is also conducted at the Masters level through sponsored projects as well as collaborative links with industrial partners. Several of these projects have resulted in IED awards (see below).
