Dr Kate Maguire Bsc Msc DPsych came into the Institute for Work Based Learning through her role as head of the DPsych programme at Metanoia Institute, a joint programme with the professional doctorate at the IWBL. Her background is in social anthropology of the Middle East, war trauma psychotherapy and authority dynamics. Her career spans leading human rights projects in the Middle East, broadcasting and production at the BBC and consulting in the private and voluntary sectors including the NHS, the British Red Cross and Medecins Sans Frontieres.She is a recipient of the Beacon award for services to the voluntray sector.

She was drawn to work based learning for its stance on the contribution of practice to knowledge and its role in creating the conditions for a more equitable share in decision making processes to improve the societies in which we live.

At the IWBL, Kate is programme leader for the doctorate in professional studies by public works, a unique programme for high level professionals and practitioners; module leader of doctoral projects and leads on staff development for professional doctotorate advisers*; advises doctoral candidates and mentors doctoral advisers; joint lead on writing and criticality through literature for doctoral candidates. She is link tutor for the Islamic College for Advanced Studies which has a joint doctoral programme with the IWBL on Muslim contributions to Intercultural Knowledge. Kate has taught at universities in the UK and overseas and has given many workshops and conference papers in the UK, Europe and the USA in professional studies, war and conflict trauma therapy and on higher education through and an anthropologicallens * professional doctorate equivalent of supervisors /directors of study

Transdicsiplinarity as an approach to knowledge for the future; quality in doctoral advising and assessing; critical autobiography; research methodologies for practice research; doctoral level criticality; diversity and emancipation. Kate has advised several doctorates to completion in psychotherapy and in a range of disciplines using a transdiciplinary approach. Currently advises Doctorates in Professional Studies including higher education development;health and safety leadership; community activism;diversity in leadership; prison skills training and reduction in reoffending (black prison population). Current public works supervision includes:NHS strategies for change;business analytics;the poet's role in a contemporary world; agricultural sustainability in Kenya Kate is also a PhD and Professional Doctorate examiner
