Chancellor of Middlesex University
The Rt Hon Lord Sheppard of Didgemere KCVO Kt
Lord Sheppard, a successful businessman and community campaigner, became Chancellor of Middlesex University in 2000. His professional achievements and public service have been widely recognised.
Lord Sheppard was born in 1932 and educated at Ilford County School and the London School of Economics. He worked for Ford, Chrysler and British Leyland before joining Grand Metropolitan in 1975 where he became Chief Executive 1986-93 and Chairman 1987-96. As well as being Chancellor of Middlesex University, he is currently Chairman of McBride plc, Group Trust plc, the Unipart Group of Companies and BG Railways Group plc.
Lord Sheppard's community interests include chairing London First – a business leaders' forum to improve and promote London – and he has been instrumental in encouraging co-operation between the capital's higher education institutions and business world. He is also Chairman of the Blue Cross Centenary Campaign and has previously chaired the Princes' Trust and Business in the Community.
Lord Sheppard is a Governor of the London School of Economics and an Honorary Fellow of the London Business School. In 1994 he was awarded the Institute of Management Gold Medal.
Lord Sheppard's recreations, as well as gardens and reading, include red setter dogs.
On becoming Chancellor at Middlesex University Lord Sheppard said: "I am honoured and delighted. Middlesex believes in widening participation, in ensuring the employability of its students and in developing lifelong skills – all matters very dear to my heart."
