Middlesex University is currently registered with the SfA as a Higher and Degree Apprenticeship provider and aims to build on its significant experience and expertise to maximise the potential for the development of integrated Degree Apprenticeships in partnership with employers.
Our institute for Work Based Learning has deployed its expertise in professional and work-based learning, working with the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC) and other bodies to promote UK University engagement with the apprenticeship agenda since 2010.
Strategically, Middlesex University is committed to building on its expertise in developing Higher and Degree Apprenticeships and is interested in working with key employers who have identified a clear need for workforce development.
The University has a significant experience of delivering professional learning in a wide range of fields but the flexibility of the University's work-based curriculum framework means that it can develop provision in any sector.
We have recently developed Higher and Degree Apprenticeships in the following sectors:
Middlesex was one of only two universities nationally to be awarded a Higher Apprenticeship Development Fund contract by the SfA. Working with UK Contractors Group employers, Middlesex developed three work-based degree programmes. This resulted in the development and approval of the Higher Apprenticeship Framework in Construction Management issued by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). This Framework includes the following Middlesex University degrees:
The University has also developed the following ‘Degree Apprenticeship ready’ programme:
Middlesex was contracted by Skills for Care to develop a work-based programme as part of the Higher Apprenticeship Framework in Care Leadership and Management. This approved Framework includes a Middlesex University Higher Diploma Professional Practice in Learning and Managing Care Services programme that provides the opportunity for Care Managers to specialize in Dementia Care; Quality and Service Improvement; Safeguarding; or End of Life Care.
Skills for Care CEO Sharon Allen said: “Our sector has seen a huge rise in the number of apprentices and it made sense to offer Higher Apprenticeships to our future leaders who will at the forefront of delivering high quality care in our communities…The work we have done with the team at Middlesex University is a model of how we can work together with education to create a high quality product.”
Middlesex has also developed the BA (Hons) Professional Practice in Care Leadership and Management (Degree Apprenticeship ready) programme as a progression route for Care Managers completing the Higher Apprenticeship.
Middlesex was contracted by HEFCE as a partner university for the Creative Skillset project ‘Exploring Higher Level Apprenticeships in Higher Education’. The project objective was to develop and test robust models of Degree Apprenticeships, with undergraduate and postgraduate awards embedded, in order to demonstrate that these new models are attractive to employers, students and higher education institutions.
The project involved working with Creative Skillset and other universities to develop undergraduate and postgraduate Degree Apprenticeship ready programmes in a range of creative industry professions. Middlesex has recently developed two work-based Degree Apprenticeship ready programmes in visual effects: BA (Hons) Professional Practice in Visual Effects and MA Professional Practice in Visual Effects.
Middlesex was contracted by People 1st to develop a work-based degree for the Higher Apprenticeship in Professional Aviation Pilot Practice Framework for individuals seeking a career as a commercial airline pilot. This resulted in the approval of the Degree Apprenticeship Framework which includes the Middlesex University BSc (Hons) Professional Aviation Pilot Practice qualification.
This work-based programme is highly innovative and is the only programme nationally that fully integrate Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) training to gain an Airline Transport Pilots Licence (ATPL) or Multi-crew Pilots Licence (MPL) with the first year of commercial flying as a First Officer.
This initiative was also recognised in the Guardian University Awards coming runner-up in the Business Partnership category for our work with our partner CTC Aviation. CTC Aviation secure 98% placement of qualified pilots with commercial airlines such as easyJet, Virgin Air, British Airways and many others.
The partnership with CTC Aviation and Middlesex University also includes a three way Memorandum of Understanding to promote pilot progression through the work-based Middlesex degree with easyJet. Middlesex also works with Tayside Aviation in partnership with Logan Air and with Helicentre Aviation Academy. There is significant potential for the introduction of the apprenticeship levy to incentivise commercial airlines to invest in the on-the job training of pilots through the Degree Apprenticeship.
Middlesex has a track record of developing work-based higher education programmes for the retail sector having previously worked with Marks and Spencer and currently working nationally with Asda and Halifax Retail Bank.
Middlesex is also a member of the National Skills Academy for Retail Higher Education Advisory Group. As a member of the SfA funded Higher Apprenticeship in Retail Management consortium Middlesex contributed to the development of the level 4 Higher Apprenticeship and was specifically contracted by People 1st to develop a work-based Foundation Degree for Higher Apprenticeship at level 5.
Middlesex has validated a BA (Hons) Retail Management programme for Asda as a key aspect of their workforce development strategy. The Degree integrates Asda Retail Academy in-company training with work-based University modules.
The Asda programme (although not constructed as a Degree Apprenticeship at present) is a model of what a Degree Apprenticeship should be as the integration of in-company training ensures that the programme is fully aligned with the talent management strategies of the employer.
The programme also offers ‘step on and step off’ entry and exit qualifications that are lead to specific management job roles, from Section Leader to General Store Manager.
The work-based approach ensures that the learning required to complete the Degree also has business benefits to the employer through the enhancement of working practice.
The co-development and delivery model for this work-based Degree provides a highly innovative and transferable approach for Degree Apprenticeship development.
