Texts for editing, proofreading or translation are always carefully assessed before quotation and final acceptance. Following initial discussions, we will send a contract (by fax or email) confirming our quotation, delivery date and terms and conditions before proceeding with the project. All work undertaken will be in accordance with our standard terms and conditions which are always available on request.
Our translators
Translators are expert cultural mediators, working within a technologically sophisticated global market. TRANSCEN has an ever-expanding database of qualified translators and linguists, all of whom have broad-ranging experience in their specialist fields and a keen awareness of the importance of cultural factors in determining the final textual product. Many of TRANSCEN’s translators are also researchers or academics associated with Middlesex University Translation Institute, allowing for a positive cross-fertilization between theory and practice.
Timing
We understand that translations may be needed quickly and we are often able to complete work to tight deadlines. As a guide, a professional translator might be expected to translate between 1,500 and 2,000 words a day. Texts requiring detailed research or extra revision, however, may demand longer.
Costs
Cost structure depends on a combination of factors which include the type of source text requiring translation, its length and legibility, the languages involved (European or non- European), the speed of turnaround and the quality of translation (ranging from a gist translation to one which is ready for publication). Out of consideration for our translators, TRANSCEN applies additional charges to texts needed at particularly short notice, or entailing work over a weekend or Bank Holiday. The cost of a translation is calculated per 1,000 words of a target text and a minimum charge will be applied to texts that are under 1,000 words in total.
Delivery
Documents can be delivered to TRANSCEN as hard copy, by fax, or in electronic format. Completed projects will be returned either by fax or email, or on paper, CD-ROM or floppy disk.
Translator training
TRANSCEN is committed to improving the status of translation and translators. As an important part of Middlesex University Translation Institute, it is equally committed to an active involvement in translator training. Where suitable, and in consultation with clients, TRANSCEN also provides opportunities for student participation in the supervised production of translations. Given the reduced costs, such projects are typically only offered to community groups and registered charities and depend upon the availability of student translators, as well as the length, type, and language of the source text.
