Available through online distance learning or at our state-of-the-art London campus, this course will equip you with the skills, knowledge and support to develop new insights into the policies, theory and practice of coaching and mentoring as a strategy for developing people in education. Guided by experienced practitioners, you will examine a variety of tools used in coaching and mentoring while reflecting on your own practice and the impact it has on others.

Through a series of workshop sessions you will explore a range of topics to support your professional development and studies, including theories of learning, models of coaching and mentoring, accountabilities, ethics, and professional learning conversations. As part of this course you will be expected to mentor or coach staff while collecting data that will be used to analyse the impact your practice has on others.

Armed with these skills and contemporary insights you will not only boost your career prospects for the future but develop your current coaching and mentoring abilities for a wide range of clients.

What will you study on Developing Effective Coaching and Mentoring Module?

This short course is structured to enable you to maintain your professional employment while advancing your learning through part-time study sessions at our London campus or online via distance learning.

Through a series of lessons and workshops you will explore a range of key topics that are designed to enhance your research and professional development. These topics include:

  • Adult learning and theories of learning
  • Learning styles
  • Reflection and reflective practice
  • Transformative learning
  • Models of coaching and mentoring
  • Purposes of mentoring and coaching
  • Accountabilities and ethics
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Needs, focus and target setting
  • Tools for coaching and mentoring
  • Observation and feedback
  • Assessing, appraisal and accrediting of professional learning and practice
  • Professional learning conversations, listening and asking questions
  • The action research project

Assessment

You will be assessed through a portfolio (supervised by the module leader over the course of the year).

The portfolio may include:

  • Needs analysis
  • Learning journal
  • Reading log
  • Evidence of critical engagement with relevant literature and research
  • Analysis of learning visit and conversations
  • An action research project report

This module is suitable for those in education who have a coaching or mentoring role. They might be, for example, middle or senior leaders, AST's, ITT coaches, MTL Coaches and mentors, staff developers.
