English language support
To make the most of your time at Middlesex, you will need an excellent command of the English language. We normally require evidence of your ability, through, for example, the IELTS English test, which can be taken at British Council centres in many countries. Middlesex University Language Centre is an IELTS Testing Centre and we can advise on the test. For successful study the minimum acceptable IELTS score is 6.0 (550 TOEFL).
International Foundation Programme
If you need to study your chosen subject in more detail before taking it as a degree course, and your English language level is at least IELTS 4.5 (TOEFL 475), you are recommended to take our Middlesex University preparation programme.
This course combines intensive language tuition with teaching in the subject area you would like to study at Middlesex. Successful completion of this year guarantees a place at Middlesex. Shorter courses are also available to meet individual needs.
English tuition
If you need an intensive English language course to reach the required undergraduate level of IELTS 6 (TOEFL 550), you can take one of our pre-sessional English courses.
English tuition while you study
When you arrive at Middlesex you will normally be asked to take an English test to help the University's language staff advise you about English tuition while you study here.
Free tuition is provided across the University by specialist English language and learning support teams, who offer tutorials and weekly workshops focusing on written and oral communication skills. You can also study on your own by using multimedia learning packages at our language centres on many campuses, and guidance is available from the language advising team. If you wish to gain formal academic recognition for your language training, you can choose to take additional study modules which are assessed. There are also courses leading to the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English.
IELTS testing
Middlesex University's IELTS testing centre offers tests twice per month throughout the year, and once a week in July, August and September. Four-day IELTS preparation courses are also offered each month.
