Middlesex University is seeking PhD applications for a studentship jointly funded with Alcohol Research UK entitled: Peer mentors and volunteers within specialist alcohol treatment services: role development, wellbeing and career progression. This studentship presents an exciting opportunity to examine the role of peer mentors and volunteers within alcohol treatment services, in relation to issues of workforce wellbeing and development. Within current recovery-oriented models of treatment peer mentors and volunteers are regarded as an integral part of the ‘workforce’, however, there remains a large degree of speculation regarding their position in services, development needs and wellbeing. The research will use a mixed methods approach (qualitative and quantitative methods) and offer scope for the student to develop their own ideas about how to integrate the data sets. For further information about the research.

The student will be part of the Middlesex University Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (DARC) within the Department of Mental Health, Social Work and Integrative Medicine (School of Health and Education).

    Funding and Eligibility

As this is jointly funded project you will be expected:

    • To be normally resident in the UK and intending to work in the UK after completion of the doctorate.
    • To agree to the joint funder (ALRUK) receiving an annual report on your progress. Continuing payment of the bursary is dependent on satisfactory progress.

The bursary is offered on a full-time basis to UK/EU students and covers an annual maintenance award (£15,533) paid in quarterly instalments and fee payments (at the UK/EU rate, currently £4,076). Funds (up to £300 per year) are available to support attendance at relevant conferences and courses. The studentship bursary is free of both tax and national insurance contributions. The Studentship is for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
