Overview & facilities
The MBA Strategic Management and Leadership aims to develop individuals to lead and manage successfully and ethically at a strategic level across a range of organisations, and to formulate, implement and critically evaluate decisions. It will enable managers to develop leadership and analytical skills to support and influence strategic, tactical and operational aspects of a business, and enable practitioners to understand how the various management functions in a business integrate.
Who is the MBA for?
Our MBA is designed for practising managers who want to gain a generalist perspective on management. It has been developed for those wanting to develop their entrepreneurial and consultancy skills to progress in an established company or to set up an independent venture. It is an MBA for those who are serious about practice. We do not ask you to complete a dissertation instead we have a project module worth one third of the course's credits which enhances your entrepreneurship skills or your ability to act as a consultant to your own or another organisation.
Specific objectives for the MBA – students will:
- enhance and develop previous relevant experience relating to business and management;
- develop the ability to apply previous and newly acquired knowledge and experience to complex business issues in a range of contexts;
- be prepared for leadership and transformational roles in business;
- develop knowledge, at an advanced level, of organisations, their management and the environment in which they operate, and demonstrate a broad perspective on organisational management and its wider impact on society and the environment;
- operate and manage in a global and multicultural environment;
- develop interpersonal and group-working skills;
- be prepared to engage in lifelong learning and personal development.

Content & modules
Modules
- Year 1
- Business Strategy (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to: inform students of the key developments in, and thinking derived from, the study of strategy; explore models and theories of strategy and their application by practicing managers; critically appraise where and when such models are useful; provide interesting and engaging examples and exercises that illustrate these concepts with the intent of building students capability in strategic thinking and practice.
- Project - Business Transformation (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module provides students with a means of developing further the skills and knowledge gained on the MBA, by application to a specific organisational issue or problem. It enables students to demonstrate proficiency in the design of a business enhancement project, application of appropriate methods of investigation, management of the change process, and maintenance of vision in the face of the vicissitudes of business realities.
The MBA in Strategic Management and Leadership programme is expressly designed to build upon learning acheived via the EdExcel Extended Diploma in Strategic Leadership, or an equivalent qualification which clearly demonstrates achievement of broadly the same learning outcomes. Individuals will enter this programme normally already bearing at least 100 credits at Level 7 (old MDX L4).
The programme consists of four modules:
Business Strategy (30 credits) builds on prior learning by harnessing knowledge of business functions and techniques to the processes of strategic management
An Integrated Case Study module (10 credits) provides the opportunity for individuals to demonstrate their understanding of how those different elements and functions of a business interact when strategic choices are formulated and implemented.
Research Methods (10 credits) is a preparation for the research project, and covers the main issues of research design, data analysis and collection, but it also serves to introduce the individual to the epistemological controversies inherent in research into management and organisations.
Upon successful completion of the Research Methods module you progress on to the final module, the research project (30-credits) which focuses on a substantial written piece of largely self-directed work and which addresses a major issue for an organisation or industry, thus enabling individuals to consolidate their strategic understanding as well as their ability to lead change in their chosen area.
Being delivered online, modules are taught sequentially, in the order:
- Integrated Case Study
- Business Strategy
- Research Methods
- Business Transformation Project

Student and Alumni Profiles

Varun Suraiya, MBA
“After doing my Bachelor of Science in Economics with Mathematics, I took a job with HSBC related to Hedge Fund N.A.V. calculations and then worked in my family business. After three years working, I decided to do a Master of Business Administration.
The Middlesex University MBA course is one of the older ones in the United Kingdom. The MBA touches upon all subjects including HR, operations, finance, strategy, marketing and management perspectives. As my aim is to be an entrepreneur, it is best I have an understanding of all subjects rather than going through one specific avenue. The course allowed me to do my project in consultancy and has a number of practical case studies, which allows us to think on the lines of the real world rather than being immersed in our books and theoretical knowledge.
The Applied Learning Experiences were very productive with the Management Games/Team building workshops and our International field trip. I personally enjoyed the international field trip, the exposure to another country and continent is immense.
After completing my MBA I will continue as a business executive within my family business. My main goal and interests lie in international trade and entrepreneurship.”
Mitra Zall – MBA
"Throughout the MBA we had the opportunity to mix with the other cohort of students and meet MBA Alumni - this was a great experience. On the two day business simulation experience, we could mix with the other cohort, benchmark ourselves, and compare each other's knowledge. At the Alumni evenings we were able to have an insight into our prospective futures, I found this very motivationg."
Elizabeth Solaru – MBA
“I was an NHS laboratory manager but my career wasn’t moving as fast as I wanted. The Middlesex MBA suited me; It was a way to change direction. Throughout my first year I attended networking events; I met lots of people and I became interested in recruitment as a possible career path. After graduating I set up the Middlesex MBA Careers Service and was then invited to join a start-up recruitment company. I headed up their interim management division and brought its turnover to £2 to £3 million. I found the MBA gave me credibility as a recruitment consultant as I could talk to employers and candidates in-depth about any industry. I was also seconded to the Cabinet Office to set up a leadership programme, and now I am back in recruitment in a senior post. I’ve found that as an MBA you’re not just another head in the business; you’re seen as a strategic operator who can drive change. But it’s not the MBA, it’s the person behind the MBA that counts.”
Saif Khan - MBA
"I returned to my home country Pakistan after completing my studies. I currently work at Telenor as a Marketing Specialist. Telenor is the 7th largest telecom group in the world and has 16 million customers in Pakistan. My primary role there has been brand management, sponsorship events, viral marketing, out-of-home advertising, as well as many other projects.
During the time I have been at Telenor, the marketing department has won 3 major awards: SAARC Best Marketing/Consumer Pull Award (A competition held amongst 7 countries – around 50+ organisations in the Telecoms sector; Aurora Advertising Award 2007 – The best marketing team in Pakistan; and the Global Brand Award – held in 17 countries with Telenor Global group.
I have achieved a lot since joining the company: I was involved in establishing WAP as a communication platform through Telenor; I was involved in the creation of the first portal for youth in Pakistan (djuice); and I was awarded the title of ‘Telenor Value Agent’ in return of services for Telenor Pakistan.
My tutor on the MBA course had a major impact on my outlook towards life and profession. The confidence they gave me during the year I was at Middlesex was tremendous and I really appreciate it. I am now more assertive and outspoken and they have helped me so much in my line of work today."
