General funding for your postgraduate study
We have identified some of the external sources of funding specifically designed to support postgraduate students as they progress their careers.
- professional and career development loans
- AHRC masters studentships
- bursaries
- employer sponsorship
- charitable sources
- overseas funding
- PGCE bursaries
Professional and Career Development Loans
These are bank loans that can be used to help pay for work related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year's relevant unpaid practical work). The Young People's Learning Agency will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries. Because the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, they should only be considered as an option once all other student funding options have been investigated. For further information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning or contact Careers Advice on 0800 100 900.

Bursaries
Some organisations will offer study bursaries for an array of different courses. The deadline for application is 18 August 2012 and awards are judged by a panel based on a written application. Applicants must have been accepted onto a postgraduate course before applying.
Employer sponsorship
If you are working, your employer may sponsor you if your studies or research will benefit your professional role.
Charitable sources
Charities sometimes make awards, some of which are restricted to applicants who qualify under the particular terms of the charity and they are made available for specific purposes. The major charities that may be able to assist include: The Wellcome Foundation, The Nuffield Foundation and The Leverhulme Trust.
Overseas funding
The British Government and other organisations offer a number of scholarships and grants on a competitive basis for overseas students to study and conduct research here. For general information on funding for students from overseas, contact your nearest British Council office.
