Challenging, inspiring and increasingly valuable in today's global work environment, human resource management (HRM) is an exciting discipline to master. With the power to influence the direction and success of an organisation, HRM can be harnessed to great effect by a variety of professionals, from company directors to line managers and specialist HR advisers. Whether you're at the beginning or mid-stages of your career, postgraduate study of HRM will enhance your managerial capabilities and career prospects in a diverse range of organisations.
Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), our course attracts students from all over the world and remains the UK's most popular university for international students to study HRM, according to British Council statistics. This is because our flagship course covers a wide range of HRM skills and theories whilst providing opportunities to specialise in specific HRM disciplines that are unique to Middlesex.
Taught by some of the UK's top HRM academics and practitioners, this course explores the key theories and practical skills including increasingly important areas such as organisational learning, sustainability, public policy, globalisation, and development and law, ensuring that you graduate with a thorough and practical understanding of HRM that will give you the ability and confidence to embark on, or further underpin, a stimulating career.
As part of this course, we also offer you the option to specialise in one of our unique pathways that give you a named exit award in addition to your masters. These pathways include:
This course is available as a masters (MA), postgraduate diploma (PG Dip), or postgraduate certificate (PG Cert).
PG Cert Human Resource Management
By the end of this course, you will be able to critically evaluate how internal and external factors impact an organisation and its human resources. Armed with the key theories and methods needed to formulate and implement effective strategies to manage human resources, you’ll be closer to your goal of becoming a more confident, skilled and capable HRM professional.
PG Dip Human Resource Management
This course goes further than the PG Cert to explore issues of HR development, learning and employment relations in more detail. You’ll also explore professional practice in human resource management through a series of workshops to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to be an effective HR practitioner in a diverse range of organisations.
MA Human Resource Management
This course goes further than the PG Dip to explore more issues associated with HRM, giving you the opportunity to bring together the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course and apply them to an original research project. This is a chance for you to extend your knowledge of a selected topic and to apply it to the formulation and design of a substantive investigation.
Teaching is primarily delivered through lectures, although many classes will be interactive to develop your people management skills. You will engage with exercises including roles plays and interview practice. You will have the opportunity to listen to visiting speakers and attend sessions on research methods to hone your research skills. Finally, you will work on case studies and group exercises as well as conduct your own research and directed reading. At the the end of the programme you will submit a dissertation.
Although classes normally take place during the week, students will be expected to attend some weekend classes.
You will be assessed by means of exams, your dissertation and other coursework, including reports, presentations, group assignments and your record of learning and development. You will receive regular feedback on your work.

Jamie Lyons, MA Human Resource Management
"Middlesex as a business school is recognised and highly valued by employers. I got the feeling that studying at Middlesex was more than just gaining a degree, it also included developing me as a person, allowing me to explore opportunities on how I could help the wider community.
I chose to study at Middlesex as the course offered a part-time option. The course also gave me the opportunity to pick my own modules so I could tailor what I wanted to learn to help me in my current and future job roles. I was able to gain recognition with a professional body (CIPD) to allow me to demonstrate to employers that I was a competent practitioner.
The tutors were very knowledgeable and had a lot of practical experience; this helped them relate the theory to practical experiences that enhanced the learning. They were approachable and were great mentors.
Studying for a postgraduate degree has made me realise that even when you finish your course you still need to continue to develop yourself if you want to enhance your work and personal life."
