The Applied Psychology Masters at Middlesex in London has been designed with an emphasis on qualitative and quantitative research but also equips you with knowledge of theoretical and practical issues in areas of Applied Psychology.
We supply you with course content developed to impart the advanced knowledge required to serve your interests and career aspirations. This programme is ideally suited to those who may wish to extend their research interests to doctoral level or work in local and central government agencies across Europe and other continents. It may also be a stepping stone for developing interest in professional practice following further related studies.
The course has a step-off point at Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate and combines knowledge areas and skills across Neuropsychology, Health, Business and Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Facilities
The superb Hatchcroft Building received its grand opening in September 2008 and, so far, remains the latest addition to the Hendon campus. As a student of Psychology at Middlesex, you’ll take full advantage of Hatchcroft’s state-of-the-art facilities which include:

Nearest halls of residence
There are four halls of residence either on or near to Hendon campus. Usher Hall is on campus, opposite the College Building.
Platt and Writtle Halls are at the same location in Colindale, a 20 minute walk from campus.
Ivy Hall is also a short distance away by public transport in Cricklewood.
Content & modules
This programme is ideally suited to those who may intend to practise outside the UK or who may extend their research interests to doctoral level or work in local and central government agencies across Europe and other continents.
In addition there are also opportunities for the students to pursue a placement with an organisation of their choice via the excellent facilities offered by the placement office.
To gain an MSc in Applied Psychology you will need to accumulate 180 credit points. This includes five core modules (3 x 30 credit and 2 x 15 credits) detailed below and the dissertation (60 credit points).
The programme focuses on
- Theoretical and practical issues in areas of Applied Psychology such as Health, Neuropsychology, Counselling and Business.
- Models of behaviour, relevant to areas of Applied Psychology.
- Cultural and organisational elements of work, health and safety at work, employee assistance and counselling and employee relations and motivation.
- Counselling and Psychotherapy are introduced in relation to medical models of understanding health and illness.
- Research issues focusing on both quantitaive and qualitative methods.
A strategy of continuous summative and formative assessments is applied throughout the programme, in which students receive feedback on their performance during their studies.
Assessment is by coursework and dissertation. The Research Method module has an in-lab assessment in addition to the coursework.
Modules
- Year 1
- Advanced Psychology Dissertation (60 Credits) - Compulsory
- To provide students with an opportunity for an in-depth, advanced study in a specific area of applied psychology, pertinent to the degree for which they are registered, guided by, but largely independent of, tutor support. To enable students to apply appropriate principles of empirical research to an issue of their choice within the subject area of their degree registration. To enable students to present their research study in the form of a written thesis, using appropriate styles and conventions
- Applied Business Psychology (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module introduces students to the ways in which different psychological theories and methods contribute to our understanding of the world of work, management and organisations. The module provides students with an understanding of psychologists different roles in the world of work and organisations and the different ways in which they can apply their skills. The module takes an applied and critical approach to the study of work, management and organizations and professional psychological practices therein.
- Applied Neuropsychology in Education (15 Credits) - Compulsory
- The aim of this module is to provide postgraduate students with the opportunity for academic training in up to date research and advances in educational and clinical settings in Applied Psychology as relevant to the course syllabus
- Counselling and Psychotherapy in Applied Psychology (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The aim of this module is to provide students with an introduction to the main schools of psychological therapy, their theoretical origins and how the theory is applied in practice. The module will also introduce students to the basic principles of communication skills that form the foundation of all counselling and therapy. Finally, the module will familiarise students with the role of counselling and therapy within all areas of applied psychology.
- Health Psychology (15 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to introduce students to the ways in which psychological theories and methods contribute to our understanding of physical health and illness. It will enable students to understand the psychological, behavioural and social determinants of health and illness. The applications of health psychology to clinical practice will be illustrated.
- Research Methods in Applied Psychology (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The aim of this module is to provide postgraduate students with research skills and expertise from theory to implementation required by areas in Applied Psychology. The module is designed to fulfil training requirements identified in the National Occupational Standards for Applied Psychologists Key roles 2 3 by offering a comprehensive in-depth and systematic account of a range of skills in quantitative and qualitative research strategies, and the use of SPSS software in statistical analysis as applicable to the course syllabus. A variety of teaching methods and assessment will be employed with the aim of inspiring and challenging each student, whilst promoting independent learning and a critical appreciation of the research process. Students will engage in laboratory classes, workshops, lectures/seminars, tutorials, group work, and practical sessions on SPSS and qualitative data analysis. Ultimately the aim is to train students to develop, implement and maintain personal and professional standards and ethical research practice in Applied Psychology.

Entry requirements
We welcome applications from graduates with a good honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject. We also consider candidates with other relevant qualifications and individuals with a minimum of three years' work experience. Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level.
You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all four components) or TOEFL paper based 575 (no less than 4.5 in test of written English) or TOEFL internet based 90 (with no less than 19 in each component) Middlesex also offers an Intensive Academic English course (Pre-Sessional) that ranges from 5-17 weeks, depending on your level of English.
