Pre-arrival information
1. Accept your offer from Middlesex University. Make sure you have received a letter of unconditional acceptance from the University.
2. Refer to the Home Office’s visa information and apply for one if needed. If you are staying for six months or longer, make sure you obtain an 'entry clearance'. If you wish to work (max 20 hours per week), participate in the internship programme or volunteer in the UK, make sure you obtain a student visa.
3. Apply for on-campus accommodation or consider private housing options.
4. Apply for the International Orientation Programme.
5. Book tickets for your flights and familiarise yourself with the airline’s baggage allowances.
6. Arrange travel insurance for yourself and your luggage.
7. Make a budget, calculate how much money you will need on arrival in UK. You will need British currency. Make sure that you will have enough money to cover your living expenses. Credit cards are also very useful, however be aware of the extra fees the banks may charge you for overseas transactions.
8. Complete online enrolment on MISIS. This procedure gives you access to your online student area and student facilities at Middlesex University.
9. Make sure you carry all the important documents with you in your hand luggage at the UK airport border:
- Passport (make sure it has at least six months validity after the intended date of return to your home country. You can renew your passport at your government’s consulate or embassy)
- Your financial evidence (eg a bank statement)
- Travel insurance
- A letter of unconditional acceptance from the University
- A letter of explanation for taking any medication that has been prescribed by your doctor
10. Familiarise yourself with the UK by researching the country’s history, culture, location, politics and current affairs. A good source of information is the country’s embassy in question, the internet or the library.
11. Bring a list of contact details with names, email address and phone numbers of people from your school and personal life.
12. Before leaving your country, make a copy of important details and give a copy of these to a relative such as: Middlesex offer letter, passport (identification and visa pages); serial numbers of any travellers’ cheques; credit card details; insurance details; copy of your travel tickets; serial number of any valuable items such as camera/laptop etc.
