Course structure and content

We offer the following courses in Summer and Autumn/Winter:

  • Pre-sessional Academic English Course for undergraduates
  • Pre-sessional Academic English Course for postgraduates

Each course has several entry points so you can enter at a different time depending on your level of English. Courses last from one to four months. Please see our brochure for more details.

Course content

Classes run five days a week (Monday to Friday). You will be in class for 21 hours a week and will be expected to do a lot of homework and self-study. Courses cover both general and academic English. They develop academic skills such as listening to lectures, taking notes, reading and writing skills and basic research skills. Oral discussion practice and presentation skills are also included.

What are the aims of course?

  • To develop the specific English language and study skills necessary for university study at either post or undergraduate level,
  • To build your confidence and prepare you for the independent learning, which is important at British universities,
  • To improve your general level of English,
  • To familiarise yourself with the culture of Britain and British universities.  

How do we teach you?

Features of our teaching methods include:

  • Small class sizes consisting of 10-16 students,
  • Combination of classes, lectures, seminars, tutorials,
  • Assessment includes group work and individualised project work,
  • Students are grouped according to language level,
  • Guided self-study sessions with library facilities available.

How do we assess you?

Students need to pass all the assessments in order to start their degree programmes at the University. The assessment involves:

  • A written research project on an academic subject,
  • A portfolio of tasks built up during the course,
  • An oral presentation on an academic topic,
  • A written exam,
  • A listening exam.

If you successfully pass the assessment on these courses you will not have to take IELTS or TOEFL again in order to enter the University.
