Course overview:

This module introduces and explores some of the most influential and important film-making from outside North America and Europe during the last forty years. We shall be looking at how films reflect their historical and social contexts, the cultures from which they emerge, and how film-makers and film movements have often rejected established conventions and traditions through their approach to film form, the visual style and rhythm with which they reveal a world. The module will address popular cinema, as well as less ‘accessible’ indigenous films and arthouse cinema from, for example, Africa and Iran. We shall be thinking about how films function both as entertainment/escapism and as cultural and social commentary. Screenings will take place in the mornings prior to the teaching sessions. Alternatively you can watch the films in your own time in the Learning Resource Centre or at home. It is essential to view all main films.
