This Summer School Access Course, covering areas like melodic writing, composition and analysis, serves as a refresher in a selection of musical areas – or as a precursor to undergraduate study in music.
About the course
A foundation-level module in the language, techniques and history of tonal music, this course covers:
melodic writing and harmonisation of melodies
notation and score reading
introduction to music theatre
aural work – intervallic and chord recognition
performance and improvisation
free and pastiche composition.
We'll examine case studies in classical and popular music to illustrate these areas – and demonstrate how different musical styles are constructed.
You'll also have the opportunity to work with students of Popular Music/ SUM0071 (composers and performers) and Music Business & Arts Management/ SUM0046 (to evaluate the roles of administrators, promoters, agents and managers within the music business).
