Overview & facilities
The BA Interior Architecture and Design Degree with Honours in Londonapproaches the design of interior space and place as a creative and intellectual exploration of people's use and experience of interiors in the contexts of society, contemporary culture, technology and the built environment. You will acquire creative and technical design skills and knowledge through a structured series of integrated design projects in which you will investigate aspects of user needs and spatial perception; functionality; form and surface; materials and light; construction and sustainability, and their application in the creation of places of delight.
Throughout the BA Interior Architecture and Design Degree with Honours you will be guided and supported in identifying and analysing design problems and in developing imaginative conceptual responses. You will be encouraged and challenged to propose innovative yet achievable design solutions.

Nearest halls of residence
There are four halls of residence either on or near to Hendon campus. Usher Hall is on campus, opposite the College Building.
Platt and Writtle Halls are at the same location in Colindale, a 20 minute walk from campus.
Ivy Hall is also a short distance away by public transport in Cricklewood.
Content & modules
Studio Levy
Art and Design programmes carry a compulsory studio levy which you must pay when you accept a place. This will be invoiced in addition to your tuition fees. The levy is used to enhance the range of opportunities and materials available, over and above those provided by basic government funding, and further details will be providedat the time of enrolment.

- Year 1
- Design Integration 1 (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to: -Develop a deeper understanding of the processes involved in the practice of design, and establish an analytical and critical approach to observation, recording and design development. -Integrate considerations of contexts, and a variety of functional and technical requirements in the interpretation of a design brief and the development of appropriate design responses. -Encourage individual creativity and originality in design responses and the communication of ideas and information. -Develop a reflective and evaluative approach to design thinking and personal design practice.
- Introduction to Processes and Materials (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to provide students with the means to: - recognise the importance of the design process in the development of a project - employ fundamental technical knowledge and workshop skills in design projects - work safely and appropriately with specialist machinery and equipment - broadly understand the properties and qualities of materials and finishes - explore, analyse and test the use of materials in a design project - understand how a design and the design process is informed by different contexts - use and develop IT and CAD skills relevant to a specialist design discipline - develop a range of skills and mediums to assist in the visual communication and presentation of design ideas and thinking - be self-motivated and disciplined and recognise the importance of care, organisation and planning in the design process - understand a range of specific transferable skills that will enable them to engage independently in effective learning and provide a framework for their personal and career development skills
- The Conceptual Basis of Design (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to: - Introduce the basic issues, approaches and principles involved in the process and practice of design, and enable the development of design ideas from initial concept to resolution. - Develop visual awareness, establish the contextual nature of design and examine the qualitative interactions between people and spaces, objects and materials. - Identify the conceptual interpretation of a design brief and requirements as the basis for developing imaginative and innovative reponses. - Encourage individual creativity and originality in design responses and the communication of ideas and information. - Initiate a reflective and evaluative approach to design thinking and personal design practice.
- Year 2
- Design Application Communication (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to: Deepen understanding of the design process and the principles and skills that inform it and consolidate the technical knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the detailed development of practical design proposals. Prepare students either for professional placement Interior Architecture, Design Practice or for self-directed study and development in the major propositions to be undertaken in level 3 modules. Emphasise the role and significance of communication in the design process and promote the development and appropriate use of a range of media and methods. Encourage individual creativity and originality in design responses and the communication of ideas and information. Cultivate a reflective, analytical and critical approach to design thinking, teamworking and personal design practice, and its relationship to professional design practice.
- Design Integration 2 (60 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to: - Deepen understanding of the design process and the principles and skills that inform it through integrated design projects utilising real-world settings and contexts. - Extend awareness of the range of contextual issues which design design, through identification and critical analysis. - Integrate the relevant technical knowledge and skills necessary for the development of design proposals capable of implementation. - Examine in depth the implications for design of human comfort and well-being, inclusively, sustainability and environmental issues, the regulatory framework and professional practice. - Encourage individual creativity and originality in design responses and the communication of ideas and information. - Cultivate a reflective, analytical and critical approach to design thinking, teamworking and personal design processes and practice.
- Year 3
- Critical and Contextual Proposition (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to enable students to identify and deliver a research project that is the product of sustained and creative engagement both with a range of research resources and an area of studio-practice. The module will consolidate skills of project identification, research organisation and development, time management, written and visual analysis and the presentation of a critical argument/thesis. The module further consolidates the development of skills required for autonomous learning.
- Design Integration 3 (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to: Enable students to apply the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired in their studies to a substantial integrated design project or projects on a specified topic. Provide students with the opportunity to identify an individual interpretation of the topic and to construct an appropriate project brief from which to develop a suitable design response. Prepare students in terms of project scale and individual responsibility for the major proposition to be undertaken in the Final Design Proposition module. Encourage individual creativity and originality in design responses and the communication of ideas and information. Develop each student s personal approach to design practice, and its articulation, through critical analysis and reflection, and consideration of the relationship between theory and practice in the context of society, culture and their professional discipline.
- Final Design Proposition (60 Credits) - Compulsory
- The project undertaken in this module will be a significant part of each student s graduate portfolio and is intended to demonstrate their preparedness for professional practice or postgraduate study. The module aims to: - Enable students to apply the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired in their studies to a major individual integrated design project on an approved topic of their choosing. - Provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate their personal design ethos in generating a contextualised response to a contemporary design problem. - Encourage individual creativity and originality in design responses and the communication of ideas and information. - Develop each student s personal approach to design practice, and its articulation, through critical analysis and reflection, and consideration of the relationship between theory and practice in the context of society, culture and their professional discipline.
Entry & applying
A minimum 220 Ucas tariff points and Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is desirable also GCSE grade C in English Language Applicants will be invited to attend portfolio interview.

English language requirements
You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.0 (with minimum 5.5 in all four components) or TOEFL internet based 72 (with at least 17 in listening & writing, 20 in speaking and 18 in reading).
Middlesex also offers an Intensive Academic English course (Pre-Sessional) that ranges from 5-17 weeks depending on your level of English. Entry into year two or three (transfer students)
If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another university, you may be able to enter a Middlesex course in year two or three. For full details of how this works see transfer students

The tuition fee for the 2012/2013 academic year for UK/EU students is £9,000.
The tuition fee for the 2012/2013 academic year for International students is £10,400.

Your interview
The interview itself usually lasts about 15 minutes, but please allow an hour as this usually includes a tour of our facilities. We use the interview to allow us to find out more about you, to better understand your aspirations and interests and for you to learn more about us. The interview will explore why you want to study the subject with us, there will be no trick questions, so don't be too nervous.
Visit an open day
We strongly advise all prospective applicants to attend an Open Day. You will be able to talk to staff and students, listen to talks on the subject areas that interest you, ask questions, go on a workshop tour and get a good feel for the campus and its facilities.

Each year, our final year students exhibit their work at the Middlesex Art and Design Degree Show.
IKEA Wembley recently set ten Interior students the task of turning pieces of their furniture into artwork, encouraging them to rummage around in the recycling bays and turn trash into treasure. The result was ten fantastic pieces that were displayed in IKEA for customers to see and vote for their favourite. Find out more and see their designs here.
