Q&A
Who is this course for?
If you are interested in developing a career in digital marketing and want to bring yourself up to speed on its technical aspects, then this course is designed especially for you. However, if you already have a technical background, and want to develop a business career in which you apply your technical knowledge to marketing applications, then this course may also be for you.
What will I learn on this course?
The course focuses primarily on various forms of consumer marketing and will consider the use of digital marketing in all scales of organisation (from the single-handed business to the multinational corporation), in all broad categories of operation (commercial, public service, charity, etc.), and in all business sectors (involving all forms of product and service marketing).
During the three years of the course, you will progressively develop your practical and professional expertise through a range of learning activities. These will include practical work involving all of the main platforms currently used for digital marketing, including the Web, email, mobile phones, online games, and interactive TV. This will be enhanced through the third-year placement, and also by giving students the opportunity to take the qualifying exams for the IDM (Institute of Direct Marketing) Certificate in Direct and Digital Marketing. (This is the only academically-based qualification that is accepted by the direct marketing profession and employers in the UK.)
The course provides a fresh approach to the study of digital marketing, in which you will be taking marketing and technology modules side by side for the three years of the course. In addition, in the final year, you will undertake an internship with an organisation that involving working on digital marketing projects. Together, these learning experiences will provide you with an opportunity to develop your employability to the maximum.
How will this course help my career prospects?
It is a particularly appropriate time to consider enrolling on our digital marketing course, because electronic business and digital marketing have come of age in the past few years. The business world increasingly needs graduates who can speak two languages: the language of business (and especially of marketing) and the language of technology (and especially that relating to online business support). This course aims to provide you with essential fluency in each of these languages. We expect you to leave the course with the knowledgeable skills appropriate to a range of businesses and organisations. In family and small businesses you will be able to determine, specify and implement systems. In more complex organisations, where you may be working in a marketing division or an ICT department, you will be able to communicate, as needed, with specialists (whether marketers or technologists) across departmental boundaries in order to undertake joint digital marketing projects. In short, we anticipate that graduates from this course will join a new generation of hybrid, boundary-crossing individuals who will be able to make a difference to the success of digital marketing in their chosen organisation.
The demand for skilled information and communication technology graduates has been steadily increasing over the past decade, and especially for graduates who can marry technological capability with business know-how. There are many jobs in digital marketing, e-marketing, Internet marketing and online marketing. These are regularly advertised on all of the major job websites (e.g. Monster.com), and especially on marketing-specific websites (e.g. Hays.co.uk, and Intute.ac.uk). For example, at the end of 2009, Monster.com advertised over 1400 jobs in Digital Marketing, 2900 in Internet Marketing, 5000 in Online Marketing, and almost 200 more in e-Marketing.
Why Middlesex?
We are a leading provider of innovative educational courses, and are located close to major job opportunities in the London area. This course is taught by specialists in their particular fields, while a final-year internship provides an opportunity to apply your learning in both areas to a digital marketing project. A final distinguishing point of the course is that you get the opportunity to sit the qualifying examinations for the Institute of Direct Marketing’s Certificate in Direct and Digital Marketing. This is currently the only academically-based qualification that is accepted by the direct marketing profession and employers in the UK.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for students with fairly clear career goals, with a strong motivation and ability to learn. You may be a school or college leaver or already have some work experience behind you. You may not have previously taken specific courses in marketing or have studied ICT to any great depth. However, we would expect you to be computer literate, and to have a keen interest in a business-related career. Whether you are interested in joining an existing organisation, or prefer to become an entrepreneur setting up you own business, you will find a great deal to interest you in this course.
