This Professional Aviation Pilot Practice degree is delivered through a partnership between Tayside Aviation Ltd and Middlesex University and gives you the opportunity to gain academic credit and a qualification based on your technical and practical flying training and early career practice.
Tayside Aviation is a well established airline and flight instructor training and pilot resourcing company based in Dundee. Middlesex University is an international leader in the field of professional practice and university level work-based learning.
The programme has been designed specifically to incorporate all of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulated training leading to the award of a frozen air transport pilots licence (ATPL (F)) and to provide a framework for recognising the learning achieved during the first stages of operational practice. The Honours level (Level 6) programme is tailored to meet the requirements of employing partner airlines and includes a qualification as a Flight Instructor and so that on completion of the programme you will have a Degree which is highly relevant to both your current and future employment.
The principle of work-based learning is to build courses around the working and training practices of particular industries, sectors or employers, so that the learning that occurs every day as part of your normal training and practice can be assessed and recognised in an academic framework without the need for unnecessary duplication. In this way, this degree programme makes it possible, for the first time in the UK, to gain a BSc Honours degree at the same time as completing 'ab initio' (i.e. from the beginning) pilot training.
At the start of the programme you will have already gained your Private Pilot's Licence (PPL) and will need to be able to demonstrate that you can reflect on the professional learning you have gained by undertaking the Pilot Review and Professional Development module. You will then proceed through Initial training, Ground School and Flying Training and be examined in accordance with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations at the appropriate points and awarded academic credit for completion of:
A key advantage of this integrated degree is that individuals have full access to student finance, which is usually denied to pilots undergoing training. And as a student of this course you'll receive a free electronic textbook for every module.
For more information, please visit the Student Finance Company and the Student Awards Agency Scotland. However, please be aware that in addition to standard undergraduate tuition fees there are additional charges made for the programme to cover the costs of flying experience. Please see the Tayside Aviation website for full details.
All additional charges made to cover the costs of flying experience are excluded from the definition of tuition fees as described in Section 41(1)(B) and (c) of the 2004 Higher Education Act.
This programme allows you to study towards a degree while undertaking pilot training and uniquely, the final year of the programme is designed to be fully integrated with the initial stages of your career as a professional pilot. The final year of the degree will allow students two options for employment during the programme (subject to interview/assessment).
Tayside Aviation has a long standing partnership with Loganair and is their first choice for recruiting professional pilots. Tayside Avation also place students with many other airlines. This degree will enhance and accelerate career progression within the industry. Loganair and other airlines recognise that graduates of this degree will feel more confident and prepared to enter what is a very competitive industry.
