Overview & facilities

The Cert HE Housing Studies is run in collaboration with the College of North East London CONEL). It will provide you with a basic grounding in housing activities, such as policy, law, management and development.

This course is also equivalent to level one of the BSc (Hons) Housing Studies. The CertHe is studied on a part-time basis over two years. Students can progress to the Foundation Degree (another one year full-time) or BSc Housing Studies Degree with Honours (another two years full-time), subject to satisfactory module grades. The qualification also forms the first stage of the Chartered Institute of Housing Professional Qualification.

The course aims

  • To develop your skills and knowledge in the key areas of housing in society, housing management (including the legal framework and inter-agency working) and housingdevelopment
  • To introduce you to a range of concepts underpinning the housing environment withinwhich housing professionals work
  • To introduce you to the role of tenants and residents in housing management anddevelopment
  • To develop a range of transferable and academic skills that can be used both in anacademic framework and in the work environment

Nearest halls of residence

There are four halls of residence either on or near to Hendon campus. Usher Hall is on campus, opposite the College Building.

Platt and Writtle Halls are at the same location in Colindale, a 20 minute walk from campus.

Ivy Hall is also a short distance away by public transport in Cricklewood.

  • The legal framework and professional ethics in the management of social housing
  • The concept of quality as applied to public services
  • The role of customers and the community in monitoring and improving services
  • How housing is financed within the national economic context
  • Helps develop budgeting, accounting and business planning skills
  • The development process and the importance of involving stakeholders in development and regeneration.
  • Helps develop a sound knowledge of building construction.
  • 1 day per week. Tuition takes place at The College of North East London, High Road Tottenham, London, N15 4RU.

    Modules

    • Year 1
      Housing Development (30 Credits) - Compulsory
      This module aims to develop students understanding of housing development and housing markets. It considers construction and the development process; design issues including sustainability; how development is financed, in all tenures; and the workings of the housing markets including how and why government intervenes.
      Housing in Society (30 Credits) - Compulsory
      This module aims to enable students to develop their understanding of the social context of social housing and the key social processes that underpin contemporary public policy. It explores current issues in social policy and the relevance of these to housing.
      Housing Management (30 Credits) - Compulsory
      This module aims to develop students understanding of the key aspects of contemporary housing management. It includes an introduction to the legal framework within which housing organisations manage their tenancies, and quality monitoring; and explores the developing role of the housing service in inter agency working, tackling social exclusion and providing housing with care and support.
      Housing Studies in Context (30 Credits) - Compulsory
      This module aims to introduce students to the context of housing studies. It considers the historical context, tracing how social housing has evolved side by side with the development of the welfare state. It also considers present-day decision making, legal and judicial processes, and current housing problems. Finally, it explores the nature of social housing organisations and their relationship with residents.

    We normally require 200-280 tariff points for entry onto undergraduate courses. However, some degrees may require additional entry requirements, for example a portfolio or an audition.

    English language requirements

    You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.0 (with minimum 5.5 in all four components) or TOEFL internet based 72 (with at least 17 in listening & writing, 20 in speaking and 18 in reading).

    Middlesex also offers an Intensive Academic English course (Pre-Sessional) that ranges from 5-17 weeks depending on your level of English.     Entry into year two or three (transfer students)

    If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another university, you may be able to enter a Middlesex course in year two or three. For full details of how this works see transfer students

    Fees & funding

    The tuition fee for the 2012/2013 academic year for UK/EU students is £9,000.
    The tuition fee for the 2012/2013 academic year for International students is £10,400.

    Applicant Days are specifically for students who have applied to Middlesex and have been made an offer.  The Applicant day is a chance for you to take a closer look at the course that you have chosen to study.  You will attend a taster session, meet your course leader and fellow applicants, meet current students and tour the campus with them.  Invitations will be sent to applicants prior to the events.
