This is a highly regarded 3-year BA Primary Education degree with Honours which combines classroom experience with professional subject studies, and covers four main subjects (English, Mathematics, Science and ICT).

The BA Primary Education degree with Honours at Middlesex University in London is an ideal course if you wish to train to teach the National Curriculum to 5 - 11 year olds, and provides a stimulating start to a dynamic teaching career. All modules are compulsory. English, Mathematics and Science comprise the National Curriculum core subjects and are studied throughout the degree. Art, PE, RE, Geography, Design Technology and History provide a curriculum balance for the other three subjects to be studied at depth. ICT features prominently throughout the course.

In Year Three there is choice for students to specialise on School Experience at Key Stage 1 or 2.

In the final semester you will have the opportunity to study abroad, such as Australia, USA or a European country. Because of our central location, we are able to cover a broad area for partnership schools, including Barnet, Enfield, Haringey, Islington, Harrow, Hertfordshire, Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Essex. Employment rates are extremely high, and many of our students gain their first teaching post in one of the schools in which they have done a school experience placement.

Nearest halls of residence

There are four halls of residence either on or near to Hendon campus. Usher Hall is on campus, opposite the College Building.

Platt and Writtle Halls are at the same location in Colindale, a 20 minute walk from campus.

Ivy Hall is also a short distance away by public transport in Cricklewood.

Modules

  • Year 1
    Art and Design (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module introduces the students to the teaching of Art and Design in the National Curriculum. Students will develop sufficient practical subject knowledge to be able research, plan, teach, assess and evaluate work for children at Key Stages 1 and 2.
    English - Classroom Application 1 (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module enables students to become acquainted with knowledge and skills for teaching oracy and literacy at Key Stage 1 as required by the National Curriculum for English and the National Literacy Strategy within the Primary National Strategy. The module will provide students with an understanding of children s language development to enable them to plan, teach, monitor and assess children s progress in oracy and literacy at Key Stage 1.
    English for Primary Teaching (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    To provide an introduction to English through communication modes and to study language as a basis for teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing as required by the National Curriculum for English and identified in the Primary National Strategy.
    Geography and Citizenship (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module introduces the students to the teaching of Geography and Citizenship in the National Curriculum. Students will develop sufficient practical subject knowledge to be able research, plan, teach, assess and evaluate work for children at Key Stages 1 and 2. Cross curricular links with history and art will be incorporated within the module where appropriate.
    Introduction to ICT (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This is the first ICT module of the course and builds on existing ICT skills as well as developing new ones. The main focus is to help students develop a range of ICT skills in readiness for professional life as a teacher. The module will also provide a general overview of ICT in the Primary School and prepare students to plan and teach ICT lessons.
    Introduction to Primary History Education (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module introduces the students to the National Curriculum with particular reference to history, and for the students to audit their subject knowledge requirements for teaching Primary history and begin to apply what they know to the KS1 and KS2 curriculum. Cross curricular links with citizenship education will be incorporated where appropriate.
    Mathematics - Classroom Application 1 (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module aims to increase the students knowledge of the National Curriculum and the National Numeracy Strategy NNS enabling them to plan effective maths lessons. Students will study aspects of how to teach early number: counting, number recognition and the early operations on number addition and subtraction
    Mathematics for Primary Teaching (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    To introduce the students to the National Curriculum and the Primary National Strategy PNS with particular reference to mathematics, and for the students to audit their subject knowledge requirements for teaching Primary mathematics and begin to apply what they know to the KS1 and KS2 curriculum.
    Physical Education 1 ( Credits) - Compulsory
    This module will consider the role of Physical Education in the Primary curriculum and will assist trainees in developing the knowledge to successfully teach Physical Education at KS1. Students will be introduced to a variety of approaches which are suitable for different ages and abilities in this subject and will develop the knowledge and understanding of short and medium term planning in this subject. Assessment and health and safety will be addressed in relation to teaching PE. Subject knowledge and understanding in line with Professional Standards for QTS and Requirements for ITT 02/02 will be included.
    Preparation for School Experience 1 and School Experience 1 (20 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module aims to prepare students for their first School Experience by supporting their preparation and enabling them to collaborate with each other, their school-based mentors, classteachers, staff and parents/carers so that they can begin to address the standards specified by the DfES Circular 02/02 Qualifying To Teach while undertaking School Experience 1.
    Science for Primary Teaching (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module aims to develop and extend students own subject knowledge and understanding of the science that is required for the successful teaching of science at Key Stages One and Two.
  • Year 2
    English - Classroom Application 2 (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    To extend students knowledge, skills and understanding of English to provide a focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing at key Stage 2. To include set opportunities for assessing children s learning in reading and writing so that approaches to assessment and utilisation of this information for learning can provide for progression through informed monitoring.
    ICT - Classroom Application (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    The module aims to give student an understanding of how ICT should be integrated into the subjects of the National Curriculum in order to support and enhance subject teaching. This aspect of ICT also provides many opportunities to meet the relevant QTS standards for ICT required for the ICT audit.
    Mathematics - Classroom Application 2 (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module aims to help students understand the development of number concepts in Key Stages 1 and 2, and the development of place value. Awareness of children s common errors and misconceptions in number calculations and the development of strategies for dealing with them is a key feature of the planning and assessment aspects of the module. To understand the mathematical operations in relation to single digit and two digit calculations strategies mental and recorded To be aware of children s common errors and misconceptions in number calculations and have strategies for dealing with them To have an understanding of a unit plan in mathematics To be aware of assessment procedures in mathematics
    Mathematics - Meeting Individual Children s Learning Needs (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    By the end of the module the students will be able to understand how children s development and cultural diversity can contribute to their learning. To understand how other adults both within the classroom and beyond can contribute to a child s mathematical development. The students will also be aware of how to provide support and develop strategies for children whom English is not the first language, and understand how to support children of all abilities in mathematics.
    Physical Education 2 (10 Credits) - Compulsory

    Religious Education and Citizenship (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    This module aims to develop a critical understanding of the role of Religious Education in the Primary curriculum Key Stages 1 and 2 introducing students to the place, nature and relevant pedagogies of RE and Citizenship Education.
    Science - Classroom Application 2 (10 Credits) - Compulsory
    For students to use their critical reflections of teaching science at Key Stage 1 to help them to meet the subject knowledge and pedagogic requirements for the teaching of science at Key Stage 2 and the standards as set out in 02/02 Qualifying to Teach.

Entry & applying

You must have GCSEs grade C or above in English, Maths and Science before making your application. A minimum of 260-300 UCAS tariff points from 2 or 3 A levels one of which should be a National Curriculum subject. Please note the only Access course that we are able to except for entry on to this program is Access to Primary Teaching. It is essential that you have 2 weeks work experience in a UK or Republic of Ireland Primary context.Open to UK applicants only.

English language requirements

You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.0 (with minimum 5.5 in all four components) or TOEFL internet based 72 (with at least 17 in listening & writing, 20 in speaking and 18 in reading).

Middlesex also offers an Intensive Academic English course (Pre-Sessional) that ranges from 5-17 weeks depending on your level of English.
