Overview & facilities

Modules are taught on one day per week over one year, with linked experiential learning in the participant’s workplace.

This course is for adults currently working with pupils in primary and secondary schools.  It is primarily designed to follow on from a foundation degree, but may also be suitable for candidates with other qualifications which equate to two year higher education qualifications (240 CATS points).  Successful participants are able to achieve BA (Hons) in Learning and Teaching.

This course aims to further develop knowledge, understanding and experience of learning and teaching in different school contexts and strengthen current and future careers.  It does not focus on ‘early years’.

Applicants need to be employed or acting in a voluntary capacity in a suitable learning context, such as classroom assistants, teaching assistants or unqualified teachers.  To undertake the course applicants need to negotiate with their head teacher or employer for release one-day-per-week for three 12 week terms, over one year.  It requires attendance at Middlesex's Trent Park campus on Thursdays.

Content & modules

The course enables participants to study generic issues as well as a continued specialism. Modules focus on topics such as inclusivity in education and schools and professional practice, as well as contemporary issues in learning and teaching. In addition, an initial module will focus on research methods in education and project planning, in preparation for a major project featuring the participant?s specialism. For those operating in primary schools the specialism modules will focus on the core subjects, currently English, mathematics and science. For those operating in secondary schools the specialism modules will focus on one examinable subject.

Assessment is by continuous submission of coursework including written assignments, portfolios of evidence, presentations and project report.

Entry & applying

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to undertake level 6 final year undergraduate degree study through successful completion of an appropriate foundation degree or equivalent.  They will have appropriate levels of numeracy and literacy to support learners in schools, as well as level 6 study.  Applicants will require a positive employer’s reference, from the head teacher (or equivalent) stating their support for study during term-time.

Secondary candidates with 240 CATS points, typically from an HND or a Foundation Degree, may want to consider applying for and completing the BA degree.  This might then enable eligibility for consideration of, and application to, an ITT programme such as the Graduate Teacher Programme (as an alternative to RTP).  It is essential that such secondary candidates’ applications provide sufficient evidence of knowledge and understanding in their secondary training subject (i.e., one examinable subject within the secondary school curriculum).

Primary candidates with 240 CATS points, typically from an HND or a Foundation Degree, may want to consider applying for and completing the BA degree.  This might then enable eligibility for consideration of, and application to, an ITT programme such as the Graduate Teacher Programme (possibly as an alternative to RTP).  It is essential that such primary candidates’ applications provide sufficient evidence of knowledge and understanding in the primary core curriculum (currently English, maths and science).
