Overview & facilities
Hospitality is a rapidly-growing industry sector. This one year top-up programme provides a bridge between your own work on a Higher National Diploma (or equivalent) and the hospitality profession at graduate level.
Your studies will include:
- A critical understanding of the international hospitality business environment
- An in-depth understanding of the customer in the service sector
- Contemporary models of competitive analysis
- Marketing management in the tourism and hospitality sector
- The growth and development of the events industry.
The programme aims to deepen your knowledge of the hospitality business, and enhance personal and career prospects. Making connections between theory and practice will develop your ability to solve complex problems in the in the hospitality business environment.

The Tourism subject at Middlesex is taught at the University’s North London Hendon campus which is well known for the diversity of the student intake. The Tourism subject carries this international flavour into the staffing - we currently have staff of seven different nationalities teaching on the programme. In addition, situated in London, a major tourism destination, we are well placed to take advantage of nearby local examples of contemporary international tourism and hospitality issues and students are encouraged to use these in their assignments.

Nearest halls of residence
There are four halls of residence either on or near to Hendon campus. Usher Hall is on campus, opposite the College Building.
Platt and Writtle Halls are at the same location in Colindale, a 20 minute walk from campus.
Ivy Hall is also a short distance away by public transport in Cricklewood.

Modules
- Year 1
- Events Management (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to enhance a critical understanding of event management in relation to the contemporary global development of tourism and hospitality industries. Critical focus will be placed on enhancing students awareness of the Event sector and evaluating relevant major concepts and key management issues underpinning in the international events industry. This module will focus on achieving the following: Conceptualise events in relation to contemporary business, particularly within the tourism and hospitality industries Identify the different types of events, including but not limited to festivals, exhibitions, sporting events, parties, corporate events, etc., and explore their roles in contemporary business Distinguish the current international trends and developments in various sectors of the event industry Examine the roles and impacts of events from a number of perspectives: political, economic, socio-cultural and environmental Explore the concept and different components of the event project management system, including but not limited to event planning, operations, finance, fundraising, marketing, etc.
- Hospitality and Tourism Marketing (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to apply generic principles of marketing management to the tourism industry, with a particular focus on distinguishing characteristics of tourism. Drawing upon the services marketing theory and practice, this module addresses the nature of tourism product and the specific characteristics of tourism demand and supply that shape the marketing response. This module also investigates the process of marketing planning and the practical design of marketing plan within the context of hospitality and tourism industry.
- Strategic Managemet in a Hospitality Environment (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to: Build on students prior knowledge of functional areas of management and their own hospitality-industrial experiences to develop a comprehensive, theoretically informed understanding of theories and models used in strategic management and business decision-making processes; examine the research and practical role of soft systems analysis, focusing on problems and opportunities in the international hospitality industry; to develop an ability to apply decision-making theories to hospitality operations whilst appreciating the difficulties and consequences of making changes within an organisation.
- The Service Encounter (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module builds upon knowledge and skills gained about general business functions, organisational behaviour and the marketing function and explores, in more depth and on a critical basis, the interrelationship of these disciplines in the organisation of services.
The award consists of four distinct modules, all using an extensive range of examples and case studies to reflect the global nature of the industry. The course can be studied over one academic year (full-time) and part-time study options (over two years) are also available.

Entry requirements
This is a top-up programme for students who have an HND, FdA, DipHE or CertHE in Hospitality and\or Tourism Mgt and for students who have previously completed 180 HE level credits (90 ECTS credits) in a related subject. All applications are considered on an individual basis. Please refer to the Credit Transfer webpage for further information.

English language requirements
You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.0 (with minimum 5.5 in all four components) or TOEFL internet based 72 (with at least 17 in listening & writing, 20 in speaking and 18 in reading).
Middlesex also offers an Intensive Academic English course (Pre-Sessional) that ranges from 5-17 weeks depending on your level of English. Entry into year two or three (transfer students)
If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another university, you may be able to enter a Middlesex course in year two or three. For full details of how this works see transfer students

Fees & funding
The tuition fee for the 2012/2013 academic year for UK/EU students is £9,000.
The tuition fee for the 2012/2013 academic year for International students is £10,400.

Evidence shows that students obtaining a degree qualification in tourism and hospitality are in high demand, in what is a fast growing sector in this country and abroad. The majority of students leaving this course obtain either junior management positions on management training schemes in the industry.

Applicant Days are specifically for students who have applied to Middlesex and have been made an offer. The Applicant day is a chance for you to take a closer look at the course that you have chosen to study. You will attend a taster session, meet your course leader and fellow applicants, meet current students and tour the campus with them. Invitations will be sent to applicants prior to the events.
