    The Professor of the School of Art and Design delivers his inaugural lecture: 'There is no boring design, only boring designers'

    Professor Phil Cleaver is a multi-award winning graphic designer who sees things differently. He has been described as (amongst other things) one of England’s most eminent graphic designers. In his inaugural lecture, Phil will cover is 35 years experience in graphic design at the sharp end, and will explore the kills he has honed to place him at the forefront of the design industry today.

    A protégé of Anthony Froshaug, Phil first honed his design and typographic skills under Alan Fletcher at Pentagram in 1977, with Wim Crouwel at TD in Holland, and with Michael Wolff at Wolff Olins.

    In 1984, Allied International Designers recruited Phil as creative director of branding and he then went on to establish CleaverLandor, a specialist branding design consultancy, a few years later.

    Since setting up et al design consultants in 1992, Phil has been the creative driving force behind a wide range of large brand identities, pan-European packaging and a phenomenal number of award-winning book designs.

    One of Phil’s most notable achievements includes winning a Yellow Pencil, the design equivalent of an Oscar. He is also a fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, a founding trustee of the Monotype Type Museum, a board member of the International Type Academy, a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and artistic director to the Type Archive.

    Alongside running et al design consultants and t.r.u (Typographic Research Unit), Phil is currently Professor in the Creative Industries in the School of Art and Design at Middlesex.

    His reputation is such that his early typographical work is archived in St Bride’s printing library and his book design is in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s National Art Library.
