In this ResCen/Middlesex University seminar Shobana will focus on the discursive and corporeal research behind some of her recent dance works.

In this seminar Shobana will focus on the discursive and corporeal research behind some of her recent dance works. Choreographic works such as Translocations (2013), In Flagrante (2013) and Strange Blooms (2013) will be shown in video segments and discussed in terms of the impact that collaborations with scientists had on the choreographic process.

In the second part of the seminar, Bayadere - the Ninth Life, a Royal Opera House commission to be premiered in March 2015, will be discussed in reference to more discursive research on the role of the female in orientalism and a choreographic response to definitions of culture and gender. There will be generous opportunities for the audience to partake in discussions.

Shobana Jeyasingh is the artistic director and choreographer of Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, which recently celebrated 25 years as an internationally acclaimed dance company. Shobana is also a Research Associate Artist at Middlesex University's ResCen Research Centre.

The seminar will be introduced by Ola Johansson, Associate Professor of Contemporary Performance Practice at ResCen/Middlesex University.

Attendance is free, but booking is recommended to the following email address: s.johansson@mdx.ac.uk.
