An intergenerational exchange with members of two visual arts and creative industry collectives

Join us Wednesday 14th December for an intergenerational exchange with members of two collectives, See Red Women’s Workshop (SRWW) and DARKO zine, celebrating the launch of SRWW's new publication (Feminist Posters 1974-1990) and collectivity!

During this part seminar/part workshop we will learn about SRWW’s history, motivations and methods and, as a group explore print media as a format for visual activism and collective DIY processes - drawing parallels between their relationship to the politics of then and the now.

    Art and DIY Media workshop

Following an introductory presentation and Q&A* you will be given a demonstration from our print technicians and have the chance to practically experiment in the print room, taking inspiration from See Red to make a poster yourself. Therefore, DARKO ask that you bring some material (a newspaper cut out, a slogan, a drawing, a journal entry etc.) about something you have an ‘issue’ with to work from as a point of departure on the day.

    Who are See Red?

See Red was a collective founded in 1973 by three ex-art students. They produced silkscreen posters for the women’s liberation movement and various groups on request. Their purpose was to work together to “combat negative images of women in advertising and the media” and over the years the group produced a vast catalogue of posters, illustrations and even a calendar. Today, we are lucky enough to have artist and SRWW member Dr Anne Robinson on our university faculty who has offered to share her knowledge and experience of this with us.

    Who are Darko?

Darko is a collaborative zine that lives in the Middlesex Fine Art community. They produce a fortnightly publication that brings people together to share ideas, talk about work and make together. Darko have been active for nearly a year now and have produced a number of publications. Following the workshop Darko will be producing a very Special Edition and welcome your submissions made on the day in response to the activity for reproduction in it.
