Mdx Jazz Presents Maria Chiara Argirò Group / Reuben Ard Trio at The Spice Of Life Wednesday 8 March.
The BA Jazz course at Middlesex University has been producing innovative and highly creative musicians ever since its inception in 1993. Hans Koller, Femi Temowo and Stian Westerhus were all Middlesex students, and a new wave of Middlesex composers and improvisers such as Led Bib, Maria Chiara Argirò and Binker Golding have recently had a major impact on the UK jazz scene.
“MDX Jazz Presents” is a new collaboration with 'Spicejazz' promoter Paul Pace at the Spice of Life in Soho to promote the work of current and ex-students of the Middlesex course.
Led by Middlesex BA Jazz alumna Maria Chiara Argirò, this London based group brings together fresh young talent from the international music scene with an original repertoire of new compositions by the Italian pianist, characterised by their unique lyrical and rhythmic identity.
Blending classical music and folk traditions with her own approach to harmony and melody, the compositions have been written in between her musical travels around Europe, Asia and America, calling strongly upon the sounds and aesthetics of contemporary jazz.
The debut album 'The Fall Dance', was released by Odradek Records in November 2016. The launch campaign included a sold out show at The Vortex Jazz Club and a 2017 UK tour with the support of the Arts Council England.
Supporting the Maria Chiara Argirò group will be the Reuben Ard Trio. Reuben, a current BA Jazz student, is a talented pianist and bassist from Norfolk who leads a trio with two other Middlesex students bassist Dan Barreto and drummer Mark Herdman.
