Learning environment

shepphard_libraryEvery campus has a learning resource centre with university libraries, computing equipment, language centres and audio-visual facilities. They provide all the materials you need - and our specialist staff will help you to use them effectively.  Our Learning Resources website provides detailed information.

The University library

The glass and steel Sheppard Library has room for up to 8,000 students, offers 738 open access study places and 246 open-access IT work stations.  As well as the books and periodicals you expect, it is home to computing facilities for students and its open and its glass-walled construction provides an airy, light environment for study.

  • Our collections contain over half a million items, including:
  • Around 3,000 current journal titles
  • Over 20,000 electronic resources, including databases, journals and ebooks
  • A substantial media (CD and DVD) collection.

The library is searchable via the library catalogue.  But it is not only our library you will have access to – as a Middlesex student you can use a network of other libraries via our membership of the Sconul Access Scheme and the M25 Consortium of Higher Education Libraries.

Our special collections include a comprehensive interior design library, the product information collection, including building material samples, and a fashion collection.

Computing facilities

shepphard_library_indoorsComputing facilities comprise networked PCs and Apple Macs running a wide range of software, communications and print services. There is open access to the Internet from all computers and wireless networking to enable student access from their own laptops.  Students are supported by helpdesks and IT skills training.

e-Learning

Our students routinely use a range of new technologies to help them learn.  These include online presentations with soundtracks, podcasts, our own system OASISplus, discussion boards and other innovations that allow them to stay up to date with course material, communicate with teaching staff and one another.  Our dedicated e-learning team is always exploring new ways of learning.  For instance we have developed online learning in environments such as Second Life as well as developing learning e-portfolios and wikis to help students manage their education.

Language Centre

The Language Centre is based at Hendon and operates across all campuses. We provide:

  • English programmes and an International Foundation Programme before you start your course (“pre-sessional”)
  • English and numeracy support during your study (“in-sessional”)
  • Dyslexia support
  • A range of interpreting programmes
  • An IELTS and QTS testing centre

Audio-visual facilities

Our audio-visual facilities include: video-conferencing, television and photographic studios, darkrooms, video-editing suites and various equipment for loan, such as cameras and camcorders.

Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture

The Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA) is MLA accredited and houses our superb Silver Studio collection of late 19th and early 20th century decorative art and design, designated as of national importance.
