Student support
University can be a challenging as well as an exciting time in your life and we know our students sometimes have to deal with a range of personal and financial challenges. As your general wellbeing is central to your academic success, we offer dedicated services to help manage your studies and deal with any problems you might encounter, be they of a personal, financial or practical nature.
Academic Support
Student Office
Every academic school has a student office, which is your first port of call for questions about administration and academic regulations. Staff here are responsible for your academic record, so you can stop here for quick, general and non-confidential enquiries related to enrolment and registration for modules, updating your student record and any general queries about your course.
Student Achievement Advisers are also aligned to your School Student Office and are familiar with your programme. If you want advice on what path to take with your studies, you can turn to them. These advisors know the university system and their role is to help you when it comes to making tough decisions about your studies. They can provide advice on programme regulations, deferrals, interruptions and placements, help you deal with assessment-related queries, as well as provide general advice on welfare issues. They can also give you advice on organising and managing your individual study.
Learning Resources Centre
The Learning Resources Centre provides staff support and resources to help you succeed with your course. In addition to a wide range of print and electronic journals, databases and books our librarians have created subject-based web pages including links to useful web resources and tips to help you get started.
We have a dedicated librarian for each Academic School. They provide initial induction sessions for all new students to help familiarise you with our facilities and services. We will continue to work with you throughout your course, providing further training to assist you in conducting searches of our resources, identifying useful results and using them appropriately. We run drop-in sessions, an online enquiry service or you can come and see your librarian on the enquiry desk in one of our libraries or book a 1-2-1 appointment.
Learner Development Unit (LDU)
The LDU is a team of specialists in academic writing and English language development, numeracy and dyslexia support. They give each new student a diagnostic check of their academic English and numeracy skills, and offer tailored support in any areas where there is room for development. Working with all students at every stage of their degrees to help them make the most of their studies, the LDU provides workshops, courses and one-to-one tutorials to help you succeed from day one.
Personal Support
Counselling
If you encounter problems while studying - related to coursework, personal or emotional difficulties - you can consult one of our professional counsellors confidentially. They are available at every campus for one-to-one sessions, group workshops on issues such as managing stress and starting at University, and can also provide referral services.
Student Welfare and International Resources Lounge (SWIRL)
SWIRL is an independent service offered to all students by our Students' Union, providing information and advice on all aspects of university life. Whatever your welfare or academic needs, SWIRL is on hand to offer you unbiased advice, help and support.
Students with Disabilities
We are committed to equality of access and our Disability Support Service is dedicated to working towards this and supporting disabled students through their time with Middlesex. They can help you with advice on study, practical help in applying for disability allowances and other matters like arranging special provision for examinations.
Childcare
Many of our students successfully combine study with parenthood. With our flexible study programmes and extensive online learning materials, our academic culture is very supportive of students with children. We have full time nurseries at Hendon and Trent Park and half-term play schemes at Trent Park, which have received very positive OFSTED reports. All students with children are eligible to use these and we allocate places on a first-come first-served basis.
Support for International Students
We value our international students and aim to support them from application to graduation with a comprehensive programme of support. Before applying, our Regional Offices can help advise you on courses and visa applications. Once you have a place, we offer a three-day orientation programme run by our International Student Liaison Manager Chrisy Savva, in which we collect you from Heathrow Airport and help you settle in to London and the University.
Financial Support
Middlesex Scholarships
Because we believe that education should be accessible to all, and know that some students can face financial hardship during their studies, we offer a range of postgraduate and undergraduate scholarship options for undergraduate and postgraduate students. We are also very lucky that our alumni, friends and business partners give generously each year to enable our students to benefit from a number of sponsored scholarships, awards and prize funds in a range of different categories.
Money Issues
Our Money, Welfare and International Advice Service is open to all to all students to help resolve any financial, practical or legal difficulties they may be experiencing. The service offers both drop-in sessions and an appointment system. For financial assistance, there is a range of help that you can turn to. Our bursaries are awarded to students with few financial resources to help with the costs of university, and our Access to Learning Fund is designed to help students in difficulty to remain in higher education. You can find out more by visiting the Student finance page.
Careers Service
Through a combination of workshops, one-to-one advice and employer events, the Careers Service helps our students focus their ambitions on realistic career goals, become a candidate employers cannot refuse and conduct efficient and productive job searches. Our services are available throughout your time at Middlesex and beyond, giving you support whenever you need it.
