Social Policy Research Centre

The Social Policy Research Centre (SPRC) initiates and supports high quality research of national and international standing. Its researchers use innovative methodologies to undertake research on new and emerging topics within the social sciences, in particular with neglected and marginalised communities, at a local, national and international level. The centre actively promotes interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.

The SPRC initiates and supports high quality research of national and international standing. Staff are involved in a wide range of projects funded by research councils, the EU, government departments and the major charities. The Centre supports postgraduate research students, including research council funded students and a number of well-established masters programmes.

The Centre runs events, including conferences, seminars and short courses including research training.

Main areas of interest

Migration, refugees and citizenship

Our research investigates contributes to debates on migration theory and policy. Recent projects have investigated: gender and migration; comparative European migration, in relation to family, skilled migration and citizenship rights; refugee integration and settlement; new migration in London (Polish, Chinese, Greek, Congolese); diversity, multiculturalism and citizenship.

Welfare restructuring, governance and risk

Our research has explored the impact of welfare restructuring and changing governance structures on risk and security for individuals and groups at international, national and local levels.  Recent projects have examined the labour market in comparative perspective, risks associated with life course and ethnicity, particularly for young people.

Urban policy, regeneration and communities

Research expertise relates to processes of socio-economic change and their consequences for urban and regional policy across a variety of spatial scales. Recent projects have investigated labour markets, enterprise, community engagement, informal activity, the social economy and social capital development, and social exclusion and neighbourhood development among communities resident in deprived areas.

Drug and alcohol policy

Our research has examined policy issues relating to drug and alcohol use, drug use prevalence studies and the nature of illegal drug markets, drug use risk behaviour as it pertains to youth and gender, and community approaches to preventing and reducing harm in connection with drug and alcohol use.

Human security and human rights

Researchers have explored new understandings of the nature of global security and conflict. Recent projects have examined issues of human rights, the relationship between culture and religion, gender and poverty reduction and the politics of international football.

Tourism policy

Developing research in this area examines the social and environmental impact tourism policy at the local and global level. Recent research has examined race and tourism, the ‘branding’ of cities, the impact of the Olympics in London and Beijing.
