To make the most of your time at Middlesex, you will need an excellent command of the English language.
Depending on your level of English, we offer several different options of English language support to help you before – or during – your academic study.
If your education hasn't been conducted in English, you will need to provide evidence of your English language ability to study with us. We accept a range of English tests, such as IELTS, which you must have taken in the last two years.
The level required depends on the course you choose. Read more about our English language requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
You can join Middlesex and study at a Pre-Sessional Academic English course or International Foundation Programme.
Our accredited Pre-sessional Academic English course will help you achieve the required level of English, while building your confidence. With dedicated tutors to help you improve your fluency, proficiency and key study skills, we ensure that you are ready to take on the challenges of your degree.
We offer different courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and we also offer various entry points and course lengths from IELTS 4.0 to 6.0, so if you have a higher level of English you will be able to do a shorter course. For more information visit the Pre-sessional Academic English course pages.
Pre-sessional courses take place in the months before term time. These courses are for those who do not have the level of English required to start a full degree programme, or for those who simply wish to improve their English before starting their studies.
You will not need to take a IELTS course if you pass a pre-sessional course. The length of this course will vary dependent on your level of English at the beginning of the pre-sessional programme.

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is a year-long academic course, designed with international students in mind. The goal of the IFP is to equip you with the essential skills needed for academic study at a UK university.
It is designed for international students who have achieved an IELTS 5.5 or above and/or do not meet the academic entry requirements for their chosen undergraduate programme. For more information, visit the International Foundation Programme pages.
Our Learning Enhancement Team runs free workshops and one-to-one tutorials in academic writing, English language, and communication so you can continue to improve your English skills while you study with us.
