Former Commonwealth gold medallist Larry Achike was on hand to award trophies to students that made outstanding contributions to sport at Middlesex University this year.

Around 200 people attended to see Achike, the former UK and England triple-jumper, present a number of awards on the night, which were held in conjunction with Middlesex University’s annual Sports Ball.

Lutalo Massop-Muhammad (Taekwondo) was awarded the Sportsman of 2011 and Carla Burkitt (Karate) was named Sportswoman of 2011.

“I was really happy and proud to even be nominated, but I didn’t think I would win. So, I was incredibly surprised to be awarded Sportsman of 2011 and feel very honoured,” said Lutalo, who was recently selected to represent Britain at the World Student Games.

“I’m a big athletics fan and grew up watching Larry Achike so it was amazing to have the trophy presented by him. It was definitely a night to be remembered!”

Other awards included Captain of 2011, won by Guro Jakobsen for Women’s Football, while the  Middlesex University Club of the Year went to the Judo team.
