Finance professionals throughout the world are being offered a unique opportunity to boost their career prospects without ever having to leave their desks, as Middlesex University launches two work based CIMA backed qualifications.

The innovative online courses focus on skills gained in the workplace and allow managers or senior practitioners to get new insights and perspectives into their roles by taking a reflective approach and bringing together practice and academic study.

The Professional Masters (MProf) in Accounting Practice and (MProf) Finance Practice awards are designed for members of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Not only will the courses build on personal professional development, they also involve candidates carrying out research in their workplace, designed so that the projects benefit the student and their future work, and their employer.

The courses are taught flexibly using a virtual learning environment in which candidates have access to study materials, electronic library databases and tuition and supervisory support at a time convenient to them.

Candidates are also encouraged to participate in online forums where they can interact with and benefit from the insights and support of others taking part on the programme. This provides an invaluable opportunity to network with those in similar sectors around the world who they would not normally get to meet.

“The courses uniquely recognise the learning that happens in the workplace and throughout a career.  People often say ‘I could write a book on it’ when talking about their experience, well here’s their chance,” said Firoozeh Ghaffari, Head of Accounting and Finance at Middlesex University.  “By enabling candidates to reflect and learn from what they do on a daily basis and relating it to academic theories, candidates will become not only more reflective practitioners, but ultimately more effective managers.”

The courses will be promoted by CIMA to its 183,000 members and students across the globe.  Members can use their CIMA qualifications to exempt themselves from the first stage of the three stage course.

They typically take two years to complete on a part-time basis and start in either September or January.

Eileen Roddy, Head of Partnerships and Registrations at CIMA, said: “CIMA has been monitoring the demand for degrees amongst our students and members during this period of global crisis. We know that the strengthening and enhancement of a professional’s CV is a key element when it comes to gaining the job of your dreams. As career development becomes more global and competition continues to increase, we understand that it is essential for CIMA to help students and members to position themselves as the prime players within the job market.

“The combination of a bachelors or masters degree and the professional CIMA qualification is the ultimate ticket to career success. The professional masters qualifications offered by Middlesex are an excellent way of acquiring competitive edge by aligning theoretical studies with dynamic practice.”
