Middlesex student Lutalo Massop-Muhammad will compete for Great Britain in the European Taekwondo Championships, which will be held in May in Manchester.
The sports science student, who received a sports scholarship from Middlesex, was selected to compete in the -87kg weight division.
“I’m excited to be representing the UK in the competition, especially as we’ll be competing in front of a home crowd in Manchester. I’ve been training hard and think I’ve got a good chance of winning, so I’m looking forward to competing on the 4th of May," said Lutalo.
Middlesex University’s head of sport and recreation Mel Parker said: “It's a fantastic achievement for Lutalo to be chosen to represent the Country at the European Champs, and we are all very proud of his achievements here at the University.”
The event will be the final selection before the GB Olympic squad is named in late May. Lutalo’s weight category will not be included in the Olympic Games but he has a slim chance of qualifying in another weight division.
Several other athletes from Middlesex are also hopeful of competing in London 2012.
“There is a strong possibility that we will have other current and past students competing in the games,” said Mel.
“Current students James Davis (fencing), Ashleigh Nelson (track) and Martyn Bernard (high jump) are all in with a good chance of selection and past students Simeon Williamson, Gianni Frankis, Luke Fagan and Montell Douglas could also be picked for track events.”
Fencer James Davis, another sports scholarships student, is ranked second in the country and is a good bet to make the Games in the summer. James will be speaking at a "Meet The Athlete" public event at Middlesex University on 18th April 2012.
Last month, it was announced the Olympic Torch will pass through Middlesex University.
The Torch Relay will make a lunchtime stop at the University on Wednesday 25 July 2012, giving Middlesex a unique opprtunity to celebrate London 2012, with students, staff and local communities having the chance to see the Flame up close.
