    Finchley hosts New York inspired student dance

    Dance artists from New York City have choreographed a series of performances delivered by Middlesex University dance students in front of schools and local residents at the Artsdepot in Finchley.

    Dance artists from New York City have choreographed a series of performances delivered by Middlesex University dance students in front of schools and local residents at the Artsdepot in Finchley.

    Pupils from Mill Hill County High School, Friern Barnet School, Barnet College, Hertswood School and Highbury Grove School were treated to a special matinee performance from the final year dance students, before the Arts Depot then threw open its doors to the public for an evening dance extravaganza.

    The eclectic mix of dances were performed by the 50 strong final year group of students on Middlesex University’s dance courses, marking the culmination of their final year project and months of rehearsals.

    Middlesex University senior lecturer in dance, and choreographer of one of the student dances, Helen Kindred, said: “We are really proud of what the students have achieved, some of the dances were very technical and our students were really positive and enjoyed the challenge. We had a lot of fun working on these performances but it was great to see the work finally come to life on the stage.”

    Deborah Zall was among the big names from the New York dance scene to work directly with the students on their performance. Zall, taught and influenced by revered dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, created romantic and dramatic dances for performance at the Artsdepot by the Middlesex students.

    Kindred added: “Deborah Zall is a legend. Her knowledge and experience, which she was so freely willing to give our students, was incredibly valuable. She supported and nurtured them, even spending time with and giving tips to students who were not directly involved with one of her dances.”

    Themes for the dances included a Jewish prayer for the dead, a dance about uncertainty, and a glimpse into a small apartment. The performances contribute to the students’ final grade.
