A team of Middlesex University students created illuminated banners which appeared centre stage at the Paralympic Closing Ceremony, watched by millions across the globe.
The group tailor made 16 large banners which featured a Brazilian animation (during the segment dedicated to the handover of the Paralympics to Rio). The banners included a total of 576 LED strips to create stunning effects.
Project managed by Middlesex PhD student Sid Odedra, the team was made up of six Product Design and Engineering graduates and students who even took to the stage during the ceremony to ensure the performance went smoothly.
The talented group took on the task after completing a similar project for the Olympic Closing Ceremony which saw them create illuminated clothes and props worn by Brazilian performers.
Sid and the Middlesex students got involved in both ceremonies through their partnership with top lighting designer Moritz Waldemeyer, who they had previously worked with on other high profile projects.
Sid Odedra said: “Working on the closing ceremonies for both the Olympics and Paralympics was the perfect conclusion to the amazing summer of sport London witnessed. While the project was challenging and involved long hours, nothing will ever compare to the scale of these events. The team were great and worked seamlessly, and I’m proud of what we achieved in front of a world wide audience.”
Third-year student Dean Chapman said: “The project involved a lot of late nights fitting the LEDS, testing them and making sure it was perfect as the world would be watching. However, it was all worth it and I’m proud to have contributed to such a big event, which everyone is talking about it.”
Middlesex graduate Puja Varsani said: “It was a really fun project and amazing that we all got to go on stage during the performance. It was surreal to be working on such a big and significant event so soon after graduating, but it was incredible to be part of history. I’ve even had neighbours congratulating my family since the ceremony!”
The Middlesex University team consisted of Sid Odedra, Iliyan Kukushliev, Rebecca Board, Dean Chapman, Witold Mielniczek and Puja Varsani.
