Students from Middlesex University's Raise and Give (RAG) society are celebrating after being awarded a trip to volunteer in an orphanage or care home in Romania.
The prize, which will allow four Middlesex RAG members to travel to volunteer in Romania, was awarded by volunteering organisation Challenge Abroad after the students completed a series of photo challenges – all captured and uploaded on Twitter. These included building a human pyramid, fitting into a suitcase, and a team photo including a mascot.
It was a successful month for RAG at Middlesex after the society was nominated for the most improved RAG society and last year's chair Sophie McKay was nominated for outstanding individual at the national RAG awards. Sophie was recognised for her commitment of having juggled night shifts on placement in the final year of a nursing degree with organising outstanding fundraising activity.
The last 12 months have been successful for RAG at Middlesex culminating in the nominations. More than £7,500 was raised by the society for local and national charities – the students organised collections at central London tube stations, sold 'lock hearts' in Camden Lock to couples, and even helped break a world record for the biggest number of people in a pair of pants.
On top of this seven students raised the money to go and volunteer in Uganda, helping to build a primary school near the town of Jinja.
The students are this year hoping to build on the recent success and aim to open their own soup kitchen, are planning a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro and social events in Camden.
Students' Union Vice President and former RAG chair Sophie McKay, said: "Uganda was an amazing experience – we are hoping to do more events and raise even more money for charities this year."
Sarah Bennett, also Vice President at Middlesex University Students' Union, added: "Sophie kept the society going last year with her energy and enthusiasm – to juggle RAG with her other commitments was a stunning achievement."
